I have a US cent coin dated 1987 with what i believe to have a mint mark of "PA" above the date... What is this and is it of value??

    thanks!!

    Welcome to the forum!

No such thing as a PA mint mark, so please post a picture and we can better tell what it is.

Any penny minted at the Philadelphia mint would not show any mint mark, only those from Denver and San Francisco do. More than likely the PA on yours was added post mint. A picture would help us confirm that.

    And Welcome to CoinTalk

It is a counterstamp done by someone after the coin was minted. I have one with the outline of West Virginia. No extra/added value. Nice find though, not too often that you will find a coin with an extra image struck into it.

    Hope this helps

Looks to be a penny counterstamped with an outline of the state of pennsylvania and it's state abbreviation. They aren't that rare, but are cool to find in change. I've seen sets of all 50 "state pennies" go for around $10-$20 or so.

Ohh OK... thank you very much... Can I ask one more question....

I have noticed in trying to separate and looking at my cents that some of them dont have the mint mark... from all sorts of various years... from 1934-2004... why is that??

The Philadelphia mint does not add a mint mark so if there is not mint mark it's from there.

    Ask questions any time!!!

    Good Luck

And some of those no mintmark "Philadelphia" coins were acutally minted at the West Point Mint, but there is no way currently known to tell the West Point from the Philadelphia pennies.
