What's your experience in crossing ICG slabs over to PCGS or NGC slabs?

    I didn't crossover but I broke out an ICG XF45 1891CC half eagle and sent it raw to NCG. Came back AU58.

    I've never sent coins on crossover, but have cracked an ICG coin and sent it to NGC. It was an 1880-O Morgan graded Unc Details-Artificial color, but the fields were pretty good, so I sent it in. Came back AU58. Oh well.

    Both PCGS and NGC would not grade my IGC silver eagle emergency coins as emergency release. Would have came back graded no mint bullion.

    This was an ICG MS67 DMPL. I got it for the price of a MS65. But now I can resell it for double all because of the holder. Crazy how reliant folks are on the opinions of others, huh?

    There is a group of collectors that value toned top pop (or close to top pop) brown Lincolns. They are building an entire set in brown and will pay up. That is why the cross might be worth it for that example.

    Here is the result of cracking out five ICG slabs and the PCGS grades I received:

    1890 IHC - ICG BR64 --- PCGS Unc details (cleaned)
    1896 IHC - ICG PR64RB --- PCGS Unc details (questionable color)
    1915-S LWC - ICG AU58 --- PCGS AU58
    1923-S LWC - ICG AU58 --- PCGS AU50
    1929 LWC - ICG MS65RD --- PCGS MS65RD

    I also cracked out a 3CN from an old ANACS soapbox slab

    1875 3CN - ANACS AU55 ---- PCGS AU55

    The 1890 IHC no longer had any red so I had some doubt about it not being cleaned at some point before getting slabbed.

    I was wondering why the 1896 wasn't at least graded proof details; it is definitely a proof coin. Yes, the coloring could be questioned but I've got a similarly colored 1874 proof IHC in an NGC slab.

    I was surprised the 1923-S only graded AU50. I could see AU55.

    I was hoping that the 1915-S LWC would grade out MS62; there still is a little mint red and high points looked sharp.

    The coins that crossed from either ICG or ANACS to PCGS with the same grade was still worth getting crossed over. What I paid for each plus the grading fees is still less than what similarly graded PCGS and NGC coins are selling for.

    As a final note, I think this exercise was worth the effort. It made me look at each coin a little differently. Plus, I can now enter the coins into my NGC registry.

    Just got eight former ICG coins back from PCGS. Mixed results. Need to leave for a meeting, but I'll get them listed within a day or two.

    I always break out any coin that I believe to be a better grade, my experience over the years its better to send them in raw than slabbed. I wont take a chance on an ICG slab as I've been burned once and never again.
    Old Anacs and old green gen 1 pci I haven't had any issues majority of the time the grade stayed the same or went up 1 grade.... you only get what you pay for...not that NGC or PCGS are 100% spot on.
    I just had C-B-D send in 3 buffalos I cracked out the 38 D stayed the same the 1916 went up a grade ,but the ms 65 beatiful toned pci 1913D detailed for AT ! The 38 D was a 65 and went down to a 64,and
    That was a real let down as in my eyes it was a 67 no question....a luster bomb.

    Even on the label?
    It's possible they made a mechanical error then.

    I wanted to add a comment mentioning that this exercise wasn't meant to imply that PCGS and NGC aren't infallible. It depends on who's doing the grading at a given time amongst other human factors.

    Here's the 3rd coin I've submitted from ICG, cracked out and sent in raw. Was graded MS67 at ICG and PCGS also gave it an MS67. The luster under the toning is blazing and even the TruView doesn't do it justice. Its not as dark as the photo shows.

    My recent experience in crossing over eight ICG coins into PCGS slabs was not as successful as some of you have experienced. I was hoping to get a bump in grade for at least a few of the eight; no such luck.

    I cracked all eight out of the ICG slabs and sent the coins in raw.
    The following five received identical grades at PCGS as the original ICG slabs. No photos as there was exact agreement between the two TPGs.
    1859 Indian cent, MS62;
    1830 Bust Half, AU53;
    1855-S Seated Half, G06;
    1922-D Peace dollar, MS64
    1932-S Wash. Quar., MS63

    The remaining three were a mixed bag:
    1) The ICG 1885 Indian Cent MS64 RB came back Unc. Details, Questionable Color. I'm taking a big hit on this one.
    2) 1952-D Lincoln Cent, MS67 RD came back MS65 RD. No big deal, but taking a hit on this one, too.
    3) An 1877-S Trade Dollar F15 came back VF25. A small gain.

    Considering the PCGS fees, I am through trying to guess the grades by means of photos of ICG-graded coins on auction sites and submitting to PCGS. My brief foray cost me several hundred dollars, I'm guessing. Below are photos of the three coins that did not cross exactly.

    I can see why the 1952-D Lincoln came back as 65 RD; a couple nicks in the obverse field.

    As far as the 1885 IHC I had a similar experience. I cracked out an 1896 ICG Proof 64RB that came back as Unc. details, questionable color. I have an NGC 1874 Proof RB that has similar coloring. I may crack it out of the PCGS slab and send it to NGC and see what they say. It's definitely a proof as it has nice mirrors.
