Hello I’m Josh and I’ve got a 1976 dime here that I would like some info on if anyone can please help me possibly find out the kind of error and maybe a possible value I would very much appreciate any help you can offer.. I’m only 3 years into this hobby and I still need some help lol Thank you
Hello, Shermanwaco, and welcome to CT. I think I can firmly state that your dime is not any sort of error. I am nearly 100% certain that whatever happened to your dime happened after it left the US Mint. I suspect it ended up in some acidic dirt or other such environment and got eaten alive. The likelihood of any coin leaving one of the mints looking like that is pretty slim. The reverse almost looks like calcium or something is caked on it. Keep searching! David
The stippled and mushy effect is typical of being exposed to acid of some form, and perhaps heat also. It's anyone's guess on exactly how it happened, but definitely post mint damage. I'm assuming it will weigh less than a standard coin, which would help confirm being in an acidic environment, but no matter it is post mint damage, as the others have stated.
Just because a coin may look strange, different or weird doesn't automatically make it a Mint Error.. There are many ways a coin becomes damaged after it leaves the US Mint.
Welcome to the forum Josh. Your coin is considered PMD, Post Mint Damage, due to environmental damage. It may have been in acidic soil for a time, or exposed to chemicals. Not a mint error by any means. I hope you will read posts here and educate yourself with some of the wonderful links and advice posted. Good luck.
Thank all for the help... it’s nice to know there’s people with some knowledge here that can help folks like myself so we don’t look the fool taking to a shop or trying to sale it online.. lol speaking of selling online do you think those folks asking ungodly amounts for coins even I know aren’t worth but face value. Do you think they actually get offers or is just some kinda click bait to get you to there sight... just wondering I mean I can’t see anyone falling for that stuff but they say there’s one born everyday I guess.. I’m just glad it’s not me lol thanks again and hello from the lone star....
