As a gesture of love and rememberance..my wifes Grandfather gifted her with this coin....he wore it around his neck for 50 years...ugggggggggghhh....
I suppose I cant be too critical except that he had a gold smith attach the loop eye directly to the coin!! All in all it is worth melt I suppose.

Not feeling to good in Massachusetts!! :( :( :(

Nice coin....maybe with the gold around the edge for the holder...you will have more gold then you would if you just had the coin!!!

In my opinion Jeff...there is every kind of line on this coin...it is not at all any sort of quality preserved. When I told her it was worth melt..she asked why..so I explained. It has personal value or sentiment in her eyes.

    agreed.

If my father gave something like that to me, that he wore for 50 years - it would be the finest in all my collection. regardless of mounts, holes, dings, and whatever else could have happened to it over those 50 years + the 50 it would spend worn by his son!

I have a '62 proof set from my parents and 2 silver bars that my Grandma left me and they are my greatest treasures.

Right you are Doug...right you are..that is the reason I have made a special little spot for it in the safe..Wish Grand dad had some $20 Libertys..LOL

And Rick, I agree with you...that is why my son will have my AGE collection one day after 50 years in the safe well taken care of and in high MS condition.
being a collector of AGE and other Gold Commems...it just gets me inside when I see such a nice coin all marked up...it will remain with our family for years to come I am sure.

Every coin has a history and not every coin is for collecting.

Hey that sounds like me to my wife.

Seriously I guess that coin's use is one of many reasons why well preserved coins are worth so much. Sorry it had to be your wifes thru but it sounds like her grandfather got a life's time of pleasure out of it anyway.

I didn't mean to imply deceiving anybody, just selling it on eBay with an honest description of the condition. Actually, the picture is worth a 1000 words. ;)

I agree with the others that if it has a particular sentimental value, that could make it worth keeping. In this case the condition adds to the character, knowing it was worn by a family member for so long.

Might make a cool pocket piece.

I'd use it as a pocket piece. I really love coins like this because it means i get to throw them around and fool about with them. Flip them, chuck them in my pocket. And with the sentimental value too, well you've always got a member of family around with you.

Some coins are for selling, some are for keeping. Some are for collecting and some are for fun.

Buy a pocket watch and chain and use it as a fob piece. At least that's what i'd do! :D

Actually i've been carrying a very battered and worn British Charles II gold half guinea (from the 1670s/80s) around with me for about a year now, if you think silver sounds nice... oh boy. (i also carry around a 1697 silver halfcrown with it)

If the coin was in Fine condition then you'd be looking at what a $600 + coin. Heading up to the thousands for one in EF. You can't really have much fun with one of those can you? Thus finding one in Poor+ (now poor-) was a blessing!

Many years ago my grandfather did the same thing with a beautiful 1947 fifty Peso gold piece. I was floored when I saw it. He gave it to my grandmother as a gift, but she thought it was gaudy and wouldn't wear it.

    Bigswick,
My mother wears a gold 50 peso (1947) as well.it's in a pressure type bezel and she wears it once or twice a month.I've never asked her to be careful with it because I would hate to cause her to enjoy it less. She also has a 1739 2 reales cob from Peru in a necklace. If I end up with them,I will always treasure them..AS IS! :)
