A young man interested in ancient coinage, a regular poster here on CT certainly deserves my old Probus. Congratulations @Matthew Kruse , please PM me your shipping address and the coin will be in the mail from Montreal tomorrow.

I hope the winner will post a bit about the coin after he has received it and tell us why he considers this coin not 'just another' ancient coin. Is it most special because of the emperor who issued it, the mint that produced it or, perhaps, some other characteristic. I might say that I believe the majority of ancient coins have something that sets them apart from the million other coins we see. This one, like many, has more than one possible answer.

I will definitely post about the coin once I've done some more reading about the history. Do you have any good recommendations for online sites? I've been looking at forumancientcoins recently.

I would recommend a book - The reign of the Emperor Probus, by JHE Crees.

I might like this site better if I read French:

The one below was written before you were born by an amateur who admitted then that he knew little and has not updated the page for years making it less useful for your coin. That amateur is I.

In many cases we have to rely on data posted by coin dealers but even the best of them make errors especially when dealing with cheap coins that are not their main source of income.

I can not make out what, if anything is in the central field of the reverse. That would help establish the mint. The type was used by at least three. Most of mine, I believe are from Antioch with different workshops designated ny letters in the reverse field.

This last is a separate mint distinguished by style but usually just called 'Eastern'.

I do not have one I am certain is from Tripolis (Do you? - Did I miss one of mine?) and I would have to research more to be comfortable with the matter. Probus is not one of my prime interests. We all must decide just how involved we want to get in each specialty. Information, both online and in books, has a way of being updated more often than amateurs not specializing in a topic might prefer.

Ancients can be collected on several levels requiring different amounts of study and frustration. What fits your desires? There is no wrong answer as long as you enjoy the pursuit. I study Septimius Severus intently. Probus? Not so much. Enjoy the coin.

Thank you, I will check both sites out. You probably already know, but if you use Google Chrome, you can translate the site to English with a button on the top right next to "Bookmark this tab". Reading them now :)
