Was out last week on a family trip to the Cape (Cod). At a local bagel shop, I got a 1950-D nickel in my change! See below. Sorry for the bad pics, doing my best with the magnifying glass. I didn't realize it was a 'D' until I got home. At the time, I just put it in my bag and moved on with the vacation.
Congrats! I've been searching for years and have done close to $60,000 in nickels. Not a single 50d. I have close to half a roll of 50P though
When collecting in the early 50's they were hard to find. It was the most difficult for the Junior High coin group that I ran with. We talked about it a lot.
I have found exactly two of them whilst roll searching. I've found about a dozen '39-D which are actually a lower mintage but made it into circulation.
I found one, or traded for it back in school, don't remember which. A bunch of young friends held swap meets regularly. I don't CRH so have never had a chance there.
Thanks. Nickels aren't really my "thing" and I've never CRH them. But someone gave me a partially finished (i.e. all the commons) Whitman's about 20 years ago, and I've been slowly filling it in. I didn't realize how rare the coin was until I checked to see if I already had it.
@afm1982 Awesome find. I'd be playing the lottery if I were you. Lady luck is smiling upon you. My guess, someone passed away. Someone inherited a collection. Same person didn't know about coins. That raw '50D became spending money. Congrats on a great find.
