What is the largest numismatic premium that you have ever seen? I recall at Bruce Sher Sir Walter Raleigh that takes the cake for me. Before I divulge the amount, I would like to know what you guys have seen.

Also, what is the biggest premium that each of you has personally paid. The biggest premium I ever paid was almost 27X Numismedia Wholesale for a monster toned 1883-O Morgan Dollar. The total premium for this $50 price guide coin was $1,287. This is one of those coins that when you see it in person, you are just stunned. The colors are so vivid, they look almost liquid.

Alright, let's see what you guys can come up with. I want to see some big premiums.

Haven't paid any big premiums on anything yet but I'd be willing to pay 3x to 4x more than book value for a nice, certified, NT morgan.

Well, some people were paying $20 for 2009 nickels. I believe that's 400x times face value, and probably 100-200x catalog value.

How about that penny that sold for over 125,000,000x face value recently... the Reeded edge 1795 I think it was... now that is a big numismatic premium!!!!

Okay guys, I don't care about the premium compared to face. The premium should be based on a price guide such as greysheet or Numismedia.

My goal has been not to pay a premium but rather to pay the smallest percent of the going rate I can. The best I think I have done is 3% of list (5% if you include grading).

I believe I've paid in the 80-100X value premium for certain toned nickels. These would be wild-toned nickels of common dates in the MS-62 to MS-65 grade range. These aren't very impressive when you consider the base prices are $0.10-$0.50.

I almost routinely pay 50% higher which might be half way to the next higher grade (especially when I think the coin is a candidate for upgrade). I’ll pay maybe 100% more when I want the coin more than my money. Sorry, I've never paid close to 2700%.

Price Guide is $350 for this piece (PCGS 65 RB) and I paid $1,500 for it in Oct 2007:

I can't really say for sure as I don't track coin prices. If I had to guess, I'd say I normally pay larger premiums on books rather than coins, but thats just because so many are out of print and far rarer than most US coins.

NGC Price $8.13 I paid $35 for the coin. This is my largest so far.
Most of the time I get my Roosies under NGC Price

I believe the largest multiple I ever paid was for this Franklin. Absolutely one of the best 63D's I've ever seen, and I paid roughly 7x for it. The thing is, when a coin only has an $18 Numismedia value, sure 7x sounds like a huge premium, but its really not all that much. I would have a really hard time paying 7x for a $200 coin though.

The runner up is going to be my just-purchased Peace dollar, which I paid 3x Numismedia for.

Okay, time to post the largest premium I have ever seen. The coin was a Bruce Scher 1937 Roanoke PCGS MS68 with a current wholesale value of $3,500. The coin sold in 2005 for over 13X wholesale.

You heard that right, the coin sold for $46K with a total premium of $42,500.

    That is unbelieveable!

    $900 for an $18 coin!

    50 X list?!?!?

    Wow, and you sold it?
    I presume at a profit.

I've learned for the most part to not overpay for toners. Sold it on eBay at a loss.
