Marcus Aurelisu Ae As 164-165 AD Obv Head right laureate Rv Victory advancing left. RIC 884 10.85 grams 27 mm Photo by W. Hansen maureliusas4.jpg Though not specifically referred to this coin is likely to be a reference to the Parthian War then raging. In 161 AD the war started with a disastrous defeat inflicted on the Roman army. However by 164 AD Roman fortunes had improved. Armenia had been taken and both Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus celebrated their second salutation as Imperator which is noted on this coin. However there would be two more years of war before peace was made, thus perhaps explaining the reticence in honoring which victory was being celebrated.
