Hey all, I picked up a batch of 20 Indian Head cents for $20 . . . most were in the G/VG range, there was one XF, and there was this: I've never owned an IHC before where I could actually see all four diamonds. Does that put it in AU-50 range?
Well in all honesty based off the details of the coin it would be in the AU range, but it has been harshly cleaned based off that picture. Again based off that picture I would probably say it netted around VF - not sure what was done to it to give the surfaces a porous soft type look. Just my humble opinion.
Part of the problem is the scanner I used, which made everything lighter than it is. It's actually a chocolate brown color. Here's a scan of the reverse, where the color is a little bit closer to reality.
It does appear to have been cleaned as can be seen by lack of cleaning in the letter and wreath areas. A bit more harshly on the obverse cleaning. Perhaps not too harshly tho, maybe with a soft brush. A nice find at a dollar tho.
I just took some of the brightness away. I'm not very good at color. If the image made it look brown, I would almost bet folks might not think it was cleaned. Nice find for the price.
Can't render an opinion but the color makes me suspect the coin. That's why cameras are virtually a necessity.
Maybe I will throw another monkey wrench in the works. Does anyone else think that is corrosion on the top reverse? You can also see something similar on the bottom of the obverse.
