Hi all! I just bid on my third "proper" auction, and thought I'd share a few of the coins I won. This is actually the first time I've won individual lots (as opposed to group lots) at auction. Bear in mind my budget is very limited (which is why I mostly buy on eBay lol), so these are not all fantastic condition examples The prices for this auction were pretty decent in my opinion. Elagabalus antoninianus - my first one of him Can't go wrong with a Gordian III antoninianus... And how about another one? Quietus antoninianus - my first coin of him. Pretty poor condition, but that was what my budget allowed Vabalathus & Aurelian antoninianus. This one was from the "Tareq Hani Collection", and has a nice portrait of Aurelian, but the Vabalathus side is somewhat weakly struck _____________________________________________________________________ There were a few other coins I didn't win, but thought I'd mention. I sadly didn't win the Smyrna Claudius II antoninianus, which has an obverse die match to one of my coins I also thought about bidding on the antoninianus of Nigrinian they had listed. It sold for a surprisingly reasonable 220EUR, but I thought the obverse (particularly the bust) looked a bit strange, and decided against bidding (220EUR is a very large amount of money for me, and I would hate to have bought it only to find out it was tooled or fake) Show me some of your coins you bought from Savoca!
Congratulations, @Harry G! Savoca Blue auctions are an affordable way to build one's collection. Over the years I have purchased scores of coins from them. I particularly like their fast shipping with FedEx. I did not participate this weekend because I've already committed this month's budget to other upcoming auctions and they didn't have anything I really "needed" for any of my subspecialty interests. But I did participate two weeks ago and won these coins. Anonymous, Second Punic War, 218-202 BC. Roman Republican Æ as, 27.8 g, 31.1 mm, 1 h. Uncertain mint south of Rome (Campania?). Congratulations on your purchases, @Harry G! Too bad you didn't end up winning the die-linked Claudius II (you mentioned the coin in another thread.). Bidding on a budget can be frustrating at times. I didn't attend Savoca, but I got an Athenian New Style drachm in another today. On balance, 'Style' is perhaps an exaggeration for a coin this worn...
Nice pick ups! What lot # was the Nigrinian? I missed that one and can't seem to find it now. I agree it looks strange - specifically like it's a Probus that had the beard erased.
It was lot 1318: https://www.biddr.com/auctions/savoca/browse?a=1853&l=2018650 I was unsure about the beard too, and it had a weird lighter patch around the bottom of it. The facial features also look very different from other Nigrinian coins, and the lettering is unusually spaced (with large gaps between A-N-O) Genuine coin Savoca coin
