Well, David Hall says its AT anyways - I disagree!!! Bought this on a whim, looking through a well known toner dealer's inventory online today (graded by NGC). Give me a grade, tell me what you think - and be easy, this is my first Peace dollar! (No, for those about to ask, I am not considering collecting Peace Dollars) This one just caught my eye, for obvious reasons. Call it a little pre-gaming for FUN!
Hard to tell luster in these photos, in part at least because of toning and in part because Peace dollars tend to have satin luster, I think (I don't collect them). Well, enough of my excuses. I am going to say MS64 -- it seems to have minimal marks. By the way, I like the toning and from what little I know about it, it doesn't look AT.
If sent to PCGS, yes. That was my reference to the ludicrous, ridiculous, and absolutely inane comment David Hall recently made. This little beauty already resides in an NGC holder.
I know where it came from and so I wont cheat. Do you think if it was sent in raw (assuming it was sent in the NGC holder) PCGS would've graded it?
I'm sorry I missunderstood. Thought it was already turned down by PCGS. (Great looking coins on that site)
I would not say that. I think this is a nice looking coin, but the beauty is in the eye of the beholder
It looks real clean!! I love the toning would grade MS-63 to 64 hard To tell though for certain with out a hands on examination!
Jason, Regardless of Mr. Hall's ridiculous statement, I am not sure how you can say the coin is clearly NT. While it certainly has NT indicators, the colors present on this coin are extremely rare. Personally, I have never seen that shade of green on a Peace Dollar. I like the toning pattern which also looks natural but I will simply call the coin market acceptable given the fact that I have never seen it in hand. As for grade, I give it MS63. FWIW, I find the reverse much more attractive than the obverse.
Paul, that kind of surprises me. The obverse is why I bought this coin. The coin has a definitely NT appearance to my eyes, including the clear rainbow progression below the motto and at k12. Yes, I'm aware the shades are incredibly unusual for a Peace, but they appear natural to me. What is making you suspicious of this coin, besides the unusual-ness of it?
Without seeing the coin in hand, I am leaning about 90% towards NT. The only thing that bothers me are the extremely rare colors and the fact that I have not seen the coin in hand. You know that there is an intangible look to an AT coin that doesn't show in photos and is virtually impossible to describe in words. If I see the coin in hand and don't see that AT phenomenon, I would feel very confident in proclaiming the coin AT, just as you have.
Note that I also have not seen the coin in hand. I only ordered it about 10 minutes before starting the thread this afternoon. I am relying on the reputation of a well-known member of the TCCS and my interpretation of his very good photos.
Do you know what I mean when I refer to an intangible AT appearance? If you do, you will know instantly if this coin is AT when you see it.
Yes, I believe I know that to which you refer. I have heard it described as the AT sort of "floats" on the surface of the coin, whereas the NT seems a part of the coin. There is a different feel between the two, and once it clicks, you can feel the difference even if you can't explain it.
I go MS 63 due to lack of luster and the hits on the neck. I believe that NGC gave it a 64 due to the toning.
