Hi, I compare this Lincoln coin with a 1970 and 1965 and he seem a bit bigger. Is it possible or it is just an optical effect? Thanks.
I cannot exactly find what is the problem. I know he is more bigger but i don't know why. Maybe is more upper... nose is more round and manton and hair too. There is a little dot under nose... look like a O or C (punch) with metal in center. If there is a difference, it's .2 or .3 millimeter. Maybe it's only a visual effect... i don't know. Happy new year! Thanks.
It was already explained but I'll add more detail. First , your coin is normal. The obverse of the the coin was redesigned in 1969 with a sharper, clearer, portrait of Lincoln. Prior to that, the hubs used to make the dies were worn with the portrait of Lincoln being less distinct and due to wear, appearing larger. The difference in appearance between cents dated 1968 and 1969 and later is easily apparent but neither coin is special. It is a normal redesigning of a master hub that then would be used to make master dies, that then are used to make working hubs and then working dies. Still, nothing abnormal about the 1968 and earlier cents where the bust is larger in appearance. Thanks, Bill
Everybody contributes! Just when you think you know a lot, somebody steps in and lets you know more. Reminds me of Doug's signature.
Hi, I found a 1968 (without D) and add picture to compare it. Seem to be a bit different. Add a picture of the little dot (maybe punch). Anyway, the hub explanation is certainly the reason about that. Thank you.
If you look through the years from that point on, you can see the differences in the sizes and fonts of the Lincoln. That is what makes it easier for me to put a date on an off-centered penny that does not show the date. Learn the differences and use it to your advantage. Jessie
