So grandma is trying to sort out grand-dad's coin collection. He had some Morgan dollars that he sorted into stacks by year & mintage. We found an album elsewhere, so it looks like these rolls were the leftovers, and a quick look (yes, a more detailed look will come) suggests these leftover rolls are "junk silver." Here's my question: my guess is, he bought a bag of assorted Morgans to sort through, can anyone estimate what he would have paid for a bag like that in about 1980 or 1985? (They weren't all this quality... I just photographed this one 'cuz it looked pretty.)
Without knowing how many were in the bag, the condition of them, and the dates and mint marks that is an impossible question to answer. Here's a historical chart of morgan prices. Read a little bit about grading morgans and have at it. http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.com/morgan-silver-dollar-values.html Good luck
You are going to have to be more specific on the date. Silver went for as much as about $25 (1980) to about $6 (1985), so he could have paid as little as $4500 to as much as $19,000.
I guess I was thinking about the bags that currently sell on websites like the Northwest Territorial Mint, but now that I go back and look, you are right, those bags do guarantee a certain grade. Thanks for the link!! argh, forgot about the spike in silver prices in the early 80s.. thank you for pointing that out. We may be able to narrow it down from other paperwork. Thanks!
Well, that was from a small stack labeled "BU." There weren't many that way, but they sure do look nice
