The previous picture really nails it. I don't have the software to make a tiny portion of the photo have that much detail.
I just reposted the OP's close-up from post #15. It's also the reverse of a 1921. If I could find my VAM book, there might be a reference to that gouge within [O]NE.
On this close-up, the rim looks off to me, as well. Could that line along the rim be from the mold for casting? Still learning.
Possibly, I would have to see it close up. It's clearly a cast fake (imo). The fact that the rays are that of a 1921 confirms it. 1921: 1928: OP's Coin:
A counterfeit for sure based on the 4 rays and Yakpoo's great image of the "Acne". Also, look at the right side of the rock the eagle is standing on. The branches and rays don't come close to a real Peace dollar reverse. (It's a shame the weight was never posted by the OP. ) I don't collect Peace dollars but remember a thread recently that was talking about another 1922 high relief peace dollar being found and sold. It had the high relief reverse that was used in 1921 (4 rays under ONE was one diagnostic if my memory serves me correctly.)
At first I was thinking it looks real to me, but now I believe it's a pretty good fake. I didn't find anything on the obverse that indicates a fake, but on the reverse the leaves in front of the foot are completely wrong. Not even close, which is odd, since I was believing everything else about the coin.
not all are magnetic, i have 4 or 5 peace and morgan, some carved hobo style, others plain, i got em from china for 2.99 ea and free shipping and a 6 month wait, lol wanted em for comparison
the examples i have are non-ferrous and 21.9 grams ea. not sure to size as i do not have a micrometer
Looks fake to me. The reverse is that of a 1921, but I find no reference for a gouge in the O on VamWorld.
That should be a quick and easy test that should have been ruled out before this thread was even posted. Next a ring test. Tap another coin on it and see if it rings. Closeups of the reeds. As someone else stated many fakes are non-ferrous, non -magnetic anyway so just because a magnet doesn't stick to it isn't a reason to get excited. It's just a quick way to rule out the most basic of counterfeits.
