1909-S VDB Grade?

One of the most counterfeited coins on the market. Why did the current owner/seller NOT get this coin graded/authenticaded? Nice looking coin BUT in looking at the VDB it does NOT look right. I hope for your sake it is a real coin but I am willing to bet dollars to donuts that it is not ESPECIALLY coming from a dealer with so many negative hits.

As others, I question why it is a raw coin, so would stay an arms length away, regardless of the grade. Hard to trust some raw coins in today's world of good fakes.

 

I can't see the S very well, even though I increased the size. I can't tell if it is parallel serifs and there is a dot or not. Wish I could see in hand.

That's what it appears, but questionable for sure.

 

I am no specialist on cents but in the pic you provided the "S" looks soft compared to the 1909 just an obs.

 

I agree with the rest of this group. This is a known problem seller. That alone is enough to not buy it.

 

Unless it came from your Grandfather's dresser drawer, pass on it.

 

OK...was too late to add/edit to my first post but am going to back up a bit from my original "genuine" opinion. Looked at a number of slabbed, MS/RB examples and comparatively there indeed appears to be something odd with the S mintmark. Seems to be a small "suture" line in the shape of a C running from the top of the S- mark to the bottom-left of the 0 in 1909...cannot find anything like it on any others. Plus, maybe something beneath the S...the S is not totally flush to the coin's surface like all the slab examples...but the S itself looks spot-on. Hard to peg...and hard to fathom from a roll...but I'd ask some questions and see what answers you get. In general, and this is one of them, I'd like to know know how long an item has been up, how many times renewed, etc.

 

I’m going to say MS63RB. I think it’s RB mostly because of the reverse.

Here is my MS64RD for comparison (not an S but grading is the same).

 

Stay away from this seller....he always misrepresents his coins, photoshops his images and just lies about "original rolls".

 

Are you referring to canyon City coming as the seller?

 

That ‘s’ bothers me. It needs to be lower and almost under the zero

 

I think it's all there and pretty much without a scratch. MS65RB.

 

If I recall correctly, the seller blocked me from bidding on any of their coins. That was many years ago after I was dumb enough to fall for the original bank roll schemes. I believe at the time I left a negative review. I'm glad they blocked me so as to save me from another senior moment.

The two things I'd look for first was whether the position of the mintmark matched one of the four known obverse dies. Second, I'd check the properties of the VDB as mentioned in a number of online resources. If the coin is genuine and the color original it would most likely grade MS 65 at a minimum; I really can't find any major marks on either side.

Like some others have mentioned, a coin looking as high grade as this most likely would have been sent in to a TPG already.

 

This looks like the Mars face. I don't think these SVDBs had a Mars face (but I could be wrong)...

 

Whatever...it did sell for nearly $3000 to one of over 60 bids/bidders.

 

Would really like to know the results of grading if it is sent to a TPG
