I was in a local coin shop today and the dealer showed me something that looked really neat. He had just got a short set of liberty half dollars all in 1st generation PCGS holders. The coins were all graded as MS-63 some were probably higher grade but for the most part they were all a solid 63. The set matched and each coin had a tone of white luster. It looked good. My question is what would something like this be worth. He offered it to me for 1250. I think he is high, and if I were serious could probably get it cheaper, but I have no idea what a matching set of MS-63 in old PCGS rattler slabs would be worth.
The short answer is that I don't know what a slabbed set goes for. You need a blue sheet to find the certified prices. To those considering a purchase like this I will offer the following advice: Don't assume that old holder = undergraded coin it doesn't A lot of times a coin has never been put into a newer slab mostly because it is maxxed out in its current slab. (Even if it was graded 15 years ago!) That said Tater, there are lots of WLHs out there and specimens of the more common dates can be found raw in very nice condition if like you said you were serious about locating them.
presuming your talking about the 1941-1947 set its about $1200 for a ms-63 set based on list price per coin
That may be just a bit high in my opinion, if you are referring to the 1941-1947 short set . I have been looking at these short sets in that grade for some time now. If you like the set and can get him down a few bucks, I would go for it. I have seen very few which have been offered at $1,000
All of the coins looked MS-63. I'm not counting on any being higher grade. Even if a few are the price difference between 63 and 64 are minor. Yes it is the short set from 41 to 47. At 1250 dollars I think that is a $62 average. I think I can get it for 1150 maybe a few buck cheaper, but I haven't been watching the prices on these coins so I don't know if that is even in the ball park. Odds are I'll chicken out anyway.
i was thinking that wouldnt be worth more then 900. nothing besides the 41-s (which is still minor) has much stand alone value.
Cool set to have in the matching rattlers though. Thats something you probably do see very often anymore...
The short set is listed in the Weekly Greysheet. It is listed at the bottom of the WLH listings. The latest copy I have is the 9/11/09 issue and it shows an MS63 short set at $836 bid to $913 ask. The MS64 short set is $1189 bid to $1289 ask. I wouldn't add much premium to PCGS Rattlers though unless you're an expert grader and know that many are upgrades (though actually upgrading would cost you a bunch of money and based on the MS64 prices of the 20 coin set being only around $300 higher it probably isn't worth doing so). Here's my MS64 short set, most in older PCGS holders. I paid between bid and ask for it at the time, but was willing to pay a little over ask if I had to because of the cool custom case that it came with (I've since been offered $100 just for the cases).
I'm not worthy.:bow::bow: Just checked your album out, very nice. Where do you find such good looking toned peace dollars?
Thank you... its been 8 yrs in the making. Hunting on Ebay, auctions, local and national coin shows, working with dealers.... ect. It has been an adventure trying to put together a complete set with toning -- only the 34-S is missing.....
I have one toned peace dolalr the hair is brown with blodn highlights and a little green(dotn kno where that came from) Anyways lookslike it might have been in a fire. in your opinion do you think its worth getting graded? I am thinking it will be bodybagged. Also love you collection I was literally drooling...
