Hi CT Folks, I sent my 3 Legger to NGC for "Apperance Review"

Yesterday, I decided to send my 3 legger with the fingerprint to NGC for their free Appearance Review.

I should expect to wait at least a month for an answer.

If they decide to send the coin to NCS and have it regraded after, I will let all of you know.

I'm optimistic that the coin will come back in a new AU58 NGC Holder with the Fingerprint removed.

Best of luck to you. If it goes through NCS then back to NGC, who knows, maybe the grader will fail to see the rub on the coin (if it's really there) and grade the coin an MS63 or MS64!!!! Now that would be optimistic!!!!!

Hopefully it doesn't take a month though. I sent a coin in for appearance review last year and I got a call from one of the higher ups at NGC the day after it got to them. Only took my coin about 2-3 weeks to go through NCS and then back to NGC for regrade then back to me. I felt their customer service in the matter was top notch and has since made me much more comfortable buying NGC coins.

I think you made the right choice, considering that you weren't happy with the coin. Let use know how it all works out!

Or maybe in the process of removing the fingerprint they will accidentally remove another bison leg, resulting in the soon-to-be unique 2 Legger.

Nothing wrong with optimism I guess. But my prediction is the coin will be returned in the same holder it is now - with nothing at all done to it.

Now that is not a pessimistic view, that is merely a realistic view.

and also an educated and experienced view, all the better. :smile

And it's alright for me to question that view.

Why do you believe it will be returned in the same holder with nothing done to it at all? Or is it just a mere prediction like mine?

Because I believe it is graded accurately and there isn't anything that can be done to improve the coin in any way, shape or form.

Really? You think even through NCS?

If it is an old print NCS will probably not wish to mess with it.
It's also possible NGC saw the print when grading it and still gave it an AU grade.

Imo, the coin probably won't even go to NCS. It would only go to NCS if they felt the print was a problem (damaging the coin), and I don't think that's the case. There are many coins in slabs that have fingerprints on them, and as long as they're stable, there's not much the grading companies are going to do.

I agree with Doug's point. I am still convinced that the "fingerprint" doesn't remain, but the toning/corrosion ( whatever) due to it's previous presence does as a discoloration. Unless NCS removes toning, and nickel surfaces do not respond like silver, I expect no action.

But always interesting to see what TPGs do :)

I'd like to know the OP's next move, should NGC send it back in it's original holder, without having NCS look at it. The return policy from Heritage will long since have expired. I STILL don't know why this didn't get returned upon discovery of the problem, while there was still a return priveledge.

Expect to see this coin on the 'bay, with a minimal description. It might very well fetch more money than he paid for it, with a short description such as:

"1937-D NGC AU58 3 Legged Buffalo. No returns. Paypal only, please."

Though, it's been 'test sold' (don't ask ME what that means) on another forum with no mention of the print (obviously, the 'test sell' didn't go over well).
