I am looking at buying this coin, it is ungraded and I wanted some opinions on what people thought it may grade at or be worth. If you click on the picture they are larger. Thanks.
This is HBCC-3021, Breen-6128 Rarity-4 The obverse die is well spaced with the last date numeral 5 slightly closer and lower than 182. Recutting is plain at serif of 5. Point of star 6 points directly at upper juncture of coronet and hair. From the Harry Bass Collection describing this die pairing: "This is clearly the most plentiful among three die varieties dated 1825. Total mintage for the year was 4,434 coins, with approximately 100 survivors from this die combination compared to an estimate of 20 survivors for the other two marriages combined. Although not the finest known, this is one of very few Mint State examples of this die variety. Until the recent discovery of HBCC-3020, this obverse was the only die identified, with two different reverse dies. The first combination with this obverse utilized the same reverse die in service since 1821. The second reverse was used from 1825 to 1827."
I would want MUCH better pictures before even considering a coin of that caliber. Actually, I would prefer to have it examined in hand, as well as in PCGS or NGC plastic. If problem free and genuine, I would imagine hovering around the 10K level, maybe a bit more.
Unfortunately it was not around where I live, though I had a guy I know who has sold coins for many years look at the coin on site and said it was probably XF45 to AU50 which is what I was thinking. Unfortunately, it sold for $8,000.00 and i had bid $7,000.00 so I did not get it. Better luck next time.
