0ne Aluminum 1913 1/2 Centavo from Culion Philippines. Research showed me they were exiled and was cared for by nuns. The coins would never leave the island and was washed daily by the nuns. The next Leper colony coin is from Colombia 1921 2 centavo bronze metal. Lazareto means Quarantine. These are scarce and hard for me to find. Do any of you folks have any? Show them!

I believe my Philippines collection is complete, including the paper money, My Colombia is complete, I think I need two Venezuela pieces (one from Caba Blanco and one from Isla De Providencia, one from Brazil's Santa Teresa Colony (don't have any from the Santa Casa de Misericordia hospital), and one Pala Seco piece. I don't have any of the Japanese pieces

wow that's impressive. I asked around about them and most coin dealers I talked to had no Idea what I was talking about. I love history like this to remember the suffering these people must have had to endure and Isolation.

I have a small collection of leper colony coins, but most of my coins are in Texas...and I'm not. :(

All of those are Leper Colonies? I didn't know there were so many.

Yeah, they don't come up that often and they sell quick. I have a couple or so.

I went to Puerto Rico some years back and was told that little island off "El Morrow" park was a colony exile at one given time. I was told that by a few locals (take that with a grain of salt). That's what sparked my interest in the coinage (that colony had no coins I am aware of)

Yes they are all leper colonies. There are also other leper colonies that didn't have their own coins. For example there was a group/colony in Louisiana, and there is also a colony in Hawaii. As far as I know the colony in the Philippines is the only one that had paper currency

That’s quite a collection. I have several different different coins from the Philippines, Colombia, and Venezuela, but only the Philippines collection is near completion. I have none from Brazil or Japan. My collection is made up off finds from “junk” boxes only. Many of the coins in your collection are truly rare. Congrats!

By the way, did your father find any of those back in the day (pre-1992+/-)? He and I worked at the same Engineering company were both world coin collectors and did some coin swapping back then.

We have been collecting coins since 1972, many of the leper colony coins were acquired before 1992, but not the Brazil, Palo Seco, or the Philippines paper.
