AMERICA Is Missing

Not sure how long I’ve had this coin but AMERICA is missing on the obverse. It’s an 1865 three cent nickel, my second one. There is a small crack on the reverse. It’s just to the right bog the ribbon at 6 o’clock.

The obverse is missing the word AMERICA. Only a small faint portion of the first A is visible. Look close or you’ll miss it. The A is directly behind Liberty’s cap.

Looks like wear and damage from 100+ years of circulation although rather odd.

 

Grease filled die, and circulation. I don't think circulation alone would cause it to be so far gone.

 

Look closely, the rim is still there but not AMERICA. I’m thinking a greaser but with it’s age, well who knows for sure?

Seriously, you know it was there. Something outed it. I think grease was at least a co-conspirator in the crime.
