OK, I may have caught the bug (as I seem to have accidentally purchased a Type-B 1961 Quarter -- a variety I never knew existed until the day after I got it)

I see that the 5th Edition is half cents through nickel five-cent pieces.

When is Vol 2 coming out? Or should I get 4th Ed Vol 2? (which is 2006, right? That's pretty recent, no?)

It depends on how serious you want to get about cherrypickin'.

For starters, Bill Fivaz's books are good. However, since they have such a broad scope, they cannot cover with much depth - there are many, many varieties which do not show up in those books.

Sooner or later, one should pick a specialist book which deals with only one series i.e. Overton's book on Capped Bust Halves etc.

I guess I would like to just dip a toe in . . . so I'm looking for a "starter" book here.

4th ed vol 2 would probably be the way to go.

There are two. 1st "The Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties" by Bill Fivaz and J. T. Stanton, Volume 1, Forth Edition, From Half Cents to Five Cents.

2nd Volume 2 Is from Half Dimes to Dollars, then a small section on Gold $1.00- $20.00, then the last small section on Classic Commemoratives 1892-1954.

The next book is on "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide" also by Bill Fivaz.
If you have or have access to these books, then you will have more insight into varieties and their values, that will bring a new look into coin collecting. Good Luck. :)-O)

this is the proper advice. It may be quite a while until the 2nd vol. is updated again.

A current set is Volume 1 (5th ed.) and Volume 2 (4th ed.)

There are some new varieties listed in the 5th edition of Vol I. that I read about on the Lincoln Resource site. My thinking is to go ahead and get the newest edition possible with as many of the varieties shown as you can get. There shouldn't be much difference in price, and it's probably not worth getting an outdated issue. IMHO

A new edition of Volume 2 is supposed to be out by the end of the year.
