I have been searching wheats for quite a while using cherrypickers and have had no luck at all. I also use a 15x loop.

Last year I went through several thousand wheats and found very few errors. Of course I found a lot of ones that people think are errors, eg. BIE, "poor man's doubled die" (1955), machine doubling, laminations, die cracks, etc.. Out of about 15,000 wheats I found maybe eight or ten rpm's.

It was a great learning experience. It show why errors are priced at what they are... they're rare.

I've kept some of the most interesting items even though they're not overly-valuable just to have in my collection.

Here's an example of one that I found (not a wheatie) that I've seen listed on ebay for over $200 (didn't sell). The seller called it "The Assassination of Lincoln Cent":

It's not listed as an error and is worth only what someone wants to pay for it (or what I'm willing to sell it for) but I like it and it's one that generates a lot of interest.

I've found out that if I look for errors 99% of the time I won't find any.
Most of the time I'll stumble across 1 or 2 in pocket change. When you don't expect it is when you'll find them. A couple years ago I found 2 curved clips and a 1956-D RPM-1 out of the same roll of wheaties. That was shear luck. The answer to your question is, very rarely...

    Hi,

I began to search error in an accumulate thousan coins at
home. I found little errors as you can see in the forum. I begin to think
it is more easy to buy it at ebay than search it... they are very rare... Today i search a different dime in a 2 pounds of dimes... and found NOTHING... it's incredible :)

I don't much look for errors unless I can see them at arms length,

I don't much look for errors unless I can see them at arms length, but I do find die varieties each and every week, sometimes hundreds of them.

Now I may search different stuff than you or do more of it but I find a ton of stuff. But I buy a lot of stuff,,,
Since the 21st I have went through 12,000 circ. Lincoln memorials, another 100 BU rolls of Lincoln memorials and just yesterday 2700 wheat cents and 300 Buffalos.

Last week I found 250 BU 1960-D RPM's, a 35-P Buffalo DDR-001, 1936-P Lincoln DDO-002 and a 1946-D/D RPM #1, and many others - my trouble is and has always been finding other dealers or die variety specialists to take all this stuff. Finding the stuff is never a problem but finding a place to go with it is.

To maximize your odds of finding 1st keep seaching, learn to search the good mint sets like 1970, proof sets like 1960 thru 64, proof sets 1970, 71, buy BU rolls of anything when you can afford it, let people know you are a buyer of such stuff esp. in the the 1960's and early seventies. If all else fails buy some 1960, 61 BU rolls - they are like shooting fish in a barrel when it comes to RPM's. The very best is getting to old time collections people may have that never knew anything about die varieties and /or get local dealers to sell you same - most dealers know very little about dies and hardly ever search them, anyway that's where I get them.

AS often as I look for them.

They are usually where I left them!

Hmm, there's a BIG difference between errors and die varieties...and the Cherrypickers' Guide lists die varieties - not errors. Reason I discern the difference is because they are completely different from one another and my frequency in finding them are greatly different.

I find half a dozen die varieties in every box of cents I search. I usually keep an average of one out of every box, the remainder are too minor and go back into the pile.

As far as errors go? Maybe one in 20,000 coins. They are scarce, and are generally simpler errors that will fit in a roll, like clips or cuds.

Yup thats my bread and butter.
I sell BU rolls and unsearched rolls of lincoln cents from 1959-1972. Same with Wheat cents, peace dollars and morgans.
The 1960 and 1961 are almost guaranteed RPM'S and other errors. My customers are averaging 12 small date 1960 per roll.
Also theyre doing pretty good regarding poor mans double ides. but no 1972 DDO yet

That's not an error. It's poetic lie sense.

How often do I find my errors? Not often enough, I admit, but that is what editors are for. I mean, I do check my facts and I am responsible for that part of it. Of course, I deliver clean copy and of course I proofread my material. But we all make mistakes. You are supposed to pay attention to the red squigglies but like that right there has a red squiggly under the plural, though not the singular, so you learn to ignore them. Fifteen years ago, I worked a project with another writer and we turned out stuff purposely to mess up the MS-Word checker. Our manager would call us into his office to explain why what we did was not an error even though MS-Word said it was.

How do you explain that the reference is wrong? I mean, you get a Whitman Folder for Mercuries and there is a space for the 1941/2, even though it is just another error, not a true variety.

    Hi All and....

    Hello Mike M :)

As I search through thousands of coins each week, I will usually find several die varieties. I find more of them in boxes of half dollar coins than just about any other type of coin. There are many more doubled dies to be found than the 1974 D DDO that everyone seems to know about.

Errors don't turn up as often any more. Years ago, (1999 and before) you could find a fair number of errors in the bags of coins that were produced by the Mints. After 2000 when the coins began to be wrapped by private companies, error coins became less plentiful to the roll searcher.

The Mint had better filtering systems and the counting companies filtered out more errors before they could get into a roll of coins. Unstruck Planchets were "findable" in rolls but most other errors ended up being found by the counting companies and then sold to error specialists , on the side.

So...many die varieties are able to be found while few errors can be found in rolls.

    Thanks,
    Bill O'

    Hi Mike,

Let me catch two here:) Mercury Dimes are Winged Liberty Head Dimes....and a 1942/1941 Winged Liberty Head Dime is a Doubled die where two hubs were involved with the creation of the die, and therefore a die variety. It is indeed a true die variety and not an error at all:)

    Thanks,
    Bill

A variety is things like a repunched mintmark(RPM), over mintmark(OMM), doubled die, transitionals, overdates, etc, where EVERY coin produced by that certain die has the "variety" on it.

An Error are things like clipped dies, double struck coins, off-center strikes, etc where only ONE coin is affected.

I find them often enough to keep me interested. I recently found a 1941 Large S 25c in the junk Silver I have. Last week I found the 1988 D DRV-006 in the sort cup. A few Merc Dime mint mark varieties, etc. I have found clipped planchets and awesome die cracks in cents.
