Hi all Can I have your opinions on this Hannibalianus please? Coins of this Roman "King of the Pontic people" are notoriously faked, often very convincingly. Thoughts?
FORVM'S fake list didn't yield anything alike. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/f...=&caption=on&older_than=&keywords=on&type=AND ... though, I am fully intoxicated And I know little about the type, but at least yours doesn't have a filed in hole.
This is mine... purdy ruddy... Nice coins! It's hard to find a decent-priced problem-free Hanny, so i'm happy with mine for now. I'm just very wary of fakes.
Hmm.. I'm not sure. Ryro's piece has a plugged hole in that position; mine isn't holed. Are you thinking maybe it's a transfer die fake?
Great coin, especially the reverse is fantastic. I was surprised to see that 2 out of 4 people thought the coin is a forgery. The coin is clearly from different dies than the coin with the hole. I cannot see any reasons to doubt the coin, but would be interested to read other opinions.
I don't know, I just find it weird, your pic is small to see if it's just the patina or something else.
On your coin the "plugged hole" is just an illusion. The rounded bottom of the "hole" is just one of the leaves of the reed. Also, the two coins are from different dies - the reeds are different. The style of your coin looks fine to me (at least not one of the common modern fakes floating around), although I'm always leary of anything that looks "overly aged" since you don't know what's hiding underneath.
I do not see anything that would lead me to believe its false either. Looks like a nice example of a very scarce coin.
