what would cause this

    The toning on the two sides? If so, probably an number of environmental and storage factors.

    ya its like that on both sides.i guess 52 year old cello dont last..its in a p.c set.p.c. is what envolpe says..

    ya a nice coin ruined.there must be a pin hole somewere.oh well

    Agreed, from my experience.

    Probably caused by the "wire rims" on the edge of the coin. When something heavy has lain on these sets you will often see curved "cuts" in the pliofilm from the wire rims of the coins.
