Yes, I bought this one raw years ago and had NGC grade it. They graded it AU-53. The interesting thing about this piece is that Ephraim Brasher, who issued the Brasher Doubloons was involved with it. Some of the letter punches that were used to make the dies were also used on the gold doubloons. That's as close to a Brasher Doubloon as I will ever get!
These were made to circulate in the American colonies, but much like the Wood's Hibernia coinage they were remarkably unpopular. This example is actually a pattern with 24 pellets in the centre of the rose, the coins struck for circulation have 15 pellets. But obviously this saw some circulation or was a pocket piece.
Quite a bit scarcer than the Massachusetts colonials that is for sure. I remember a similar small stash of these showing up in a tube in of all places England about a decade ago caused a bit of a sensation because they are just so rare and to find say half a dozen of them is amazing.
I've got a pretty decent run of type coins, and I was working on New Jersey coppers by die variety but they just get too pricy for anything over an R3 or 4. I think I was up to around 30 varieties and switched back to Connecticuts. I hope to hit 50 Connecticut varieties this year, I think I am at 47 now. Nothing to take pictures with, I have an old flip phone that is duct taped together. I'd rather spend money on coins than overpriced phones!
God I hope I don't ever get addicted to colonials like that. Like the coins but geeze... very expensive to type set. I do have a suspicion they will see a spike in the future. So I would like to have a decent collection of them though.
I actually got my first around 1972ish? I still have it, a 1788 M67-v New Jersey. I can't remember the exact price but was definitely under $10.
I've picked up a few over the years. I don't have a large budget, so mine don't look nearly as amazing as some of the ones I'm seeing in this post. Anyhow, here's some of mine!. 1788- MA Obv by BostonCoins posted Feb 15, 2017 at 8:47 AM 1788 - MA Rev by BostonCoins posted Feb 15, 2017 at 8:47 AM 1775 KG Obverse by BostonCoins posted Nov 21, 2020 at 6:49 AM 1775 KG Reverse by BostonCoins posted Nov 21, 2020 at 6:49 AM
