I've been working on my grading skills for the past few months reading checking auction photos, picture here on this forum and looking at as many coins as I possibly can...I have been practicing on my own collection, but I need some feedback...I got a new camera so I can post decent pictures let me know if I'm close...I know I have many years still to practice....thanks...#1 I figure f12 #2 I think AG3- G4 I think from comparing my grading of other posts I may be a bit conservative thanks for your opinions....
I'd say VF25 and VG8 Sometimes grading conservatively is a good thing, but I STRONGLY recommend you get the ANA Grading Standards guide, 6th Edition.
I have the ANA grading standards 6th edition as well as PCGS guide to grading and counterfiet detection and Photograde, I have read them all, and referenced them when I was grading these...I think I have been having difficulty going from grading pictures to coin in hand, but hey I'm still a beginner....thanks for the input I will be reading all three of the books again starting this week...
Not only compare them to the photos, but read those descriptions again and again. Those are good reference books, and should help a lot along the way. You're doing great :thumb:
OP, try this. http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading-guide/Grading-Three-Cent-Nickels.aspx The 3 centers are tough to grade because of the soft strikes and clashes for so many of the years. They take patience. Look again at the coins and see if you agree with the grades that BQ has given them. ( I do ) Now, if you don't agree either ask BQ or myself how we came to the conclusion on the grades. If you DO agree, please post and tell us why. This is a great opportunity for you to learn.
Sounds good....now that I have a little hindsight from your grades, I can see how VG 8 for the second is definitely correct, It has a full rim although the dentils around 6 o'clock are very worn..and no real detail in the hair, but still very discernible..the first seems a bit high still at VF 30 I would definitely like to hear more about this one....seems the main discerning factor in the grading standard is the hair detail, and I still have a real hard time figuring wear vs. weak strike on these in circulated condition...
I usually find my grades on the conservative side, which I do not feel any pressing need to change. I have a lot to learn about strike issues, I would always defer to those with that knowledge. I see you answered my question about what guide you are using in another post. I am just getting started in posting photos, yours are miles ahead of mine so far. Are you thinking about collecting this series?
thanks I just got a new camera...makes all the difference in the world ...and yes I am collecting this series I can only afford circulated coins but so far I have 1865-2 shown 1866-1 1867-1 1869-1 I really like the series beautiful design...
