    Hi,

I found this item in a box lot at a local auction. Is this a coin? It has a diameter of 1" and is 1/4" thick. Thanks for any help in advance.

No idea, never seen anything like it. But I suspect it is not.

Back in the early 1950's there was a TV show called "What in the World?"... a panel of three "experts" would try and identify various ancient objects. I think your item would qualify.

Looks like a component to a sewing machine and somebody was gonna make a love token out of it. :secret:

The symbols don't look Byzantine, and it looks too new for that. I think it may actually be someones attempt at a love token.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Ardatirion is right about it. It turned out to be a good deal for $5.00.

There is one thing, though. I see what appear to be lathe marks on the blank side. Is it possible that this is an imitation of a Byzantine coin weight?

    Hi Helm,

This is indeed a Byzantine coin weight of 1 oz. The "A" signifies it as one; to confirm it should have a weight of about 3.3grams. Simon Bendall's book, Byzantine Weights An Introduction lists a similar item as item number 111. A 1/2 oz weight very similar in style is item 112.

It is a very nice find and is scarce. Do Not Clean It!
