It took me nearly six months, but I have finally convinced myself to send in a few of my better raw pieces for grading. This submission is a bit complex as it spans seven invoices and requires a few special requests. Luckily, my contact at NGC was more than willing to help. As many of you know, I have a fair number of Soho pieces that have retained their original shells. When possible, I have made an effort always to have the shells encapsulated alongside the coin in a multi-coin holder. Doing so allows me to ensure that shells are less likely to be separated from the coin. After all, it would indeed be a shame to lose such a unique piece of Soho history that has been carefully curated over the last two centuries. I am only sending in 17 pieces for grading, but there are 43 items listed on the submission when including the shells. On any note, I wanted to share the pieces I am submitting (at least the ones I have pictures of). 1799 Great Britain proof Farthing with shells 1791 Jean Jacques Rousseau medal 1811 Westminster Fire Office Medal 1805 Ireland proof Penny with shells 1793 Board of Agriculture Medal – proof with shells 1800 George III Preserved from Assassination Medal 1803 Boydell's National Edition of Shakespeare's Works 1793 Death of Gustavus III 1793 Execution of Louis XVI of France – Final farewell 1802 Peace of Amiens Medal – with shells 1805 Bank of England $1 obverse die trial 1753 England ½ Penny 1754 England Farthing 1917 Costa Rica 10 Centavos Thank goodness for the $500 grading credit from the NGC registry awards last year. That combined with the account credit for my membership will help, but I will still have a relatively substantial bill coming my way once it is all done. I will be sure to post updates as they become available. Feel free to do a GTG if you feel so inclined.
I also sent these in to be placed in the multi-coin holders. I am very excited to have this trio in fresh plastic as the current holders all look like they were used as NHL regulation hockey pucks. 1804 Bombay Presidency Pice 1803 Madras Presidency 10 Cash 1808 Madras Presidency 10 Cash
These served several different functions, but perhaps the most important for collectors is the protection they provided. A fellow member equated them to “original mint packaging” and I have continued to reuse it as it seems most fitting.
Excellent pieces! (As always) I always love seeing your coins. I still stand behind the thought that you should sell me that Bombay piece
@kazuma78 thank you! I plan to offer it to you first if that day to sell ever comes, but that will be much further in the future with any luck.
do you have any pictures of the coins previously holdered in the multi-coins? I'm curious to see what they look like with their shells after encapsulation.
Haha! I'm just giving you a hard time, but I'd feel privileged to be first in line in the extremely unlikely event that you ever sell that coin. Such a pretty piece and the shells and envelope really top it off. Very very cool.
I received a call today from NGC informing me that work on this submission has officially started! In my opinion, the fact that one of the higher-ups at NGC is willing to take the time to personally reach out to a small-time collector like me says a lot about the character of the company. I am very thankful for their kind consideration, and I can't wait to see how these turn out in the end. I’ll be sure to update this thread as more information becomes available.
Wowzers! Incredible coins! I like how they kept the shells in the core of those graded holders. Three-hole multiholders.... never seen that before.
Beautiful coins and apparently they and the shells will be excellently presented in the special NGC holder. Thanks for sharing. Was happy to hear about the care NGC gave you. I just made my first NGC submission a few days ago so I'm looking forward to how that develops.
