Hmm...if you consider getting a free $100 from Teletrade back in the fall a steal, then I was able to pick up a nice slabbed 1931-S Lincoln in AU 55 for a mere $20 out-of-pocket. Other than that, I'm satisfied with the brown, problem-free, PCGS-slabbed G-6 1914-D Lincoln I picked up on eBay for $157.00....I could've done worse than that.

    Merry Christmas, everybody :)

This wasn't really a steal, but a good deal I suppose.
I purchased 2 proof sets from someone earlier this year (1964 and 1961).

The dime on the '64 had subtle toning, while the half dollar had 2 ugly tarnish spots on the reverse - so I got the '64 for $12

As it turns out, the Kennedy is the accented hair variety :) - probably only worth 30-someodd dollars, but still neat

At a local auction I pAID $30.00 for 64 1932-1964 quarters in blue whitmAN folders.
melt value is over $213.00 haven't had time to go the folders to eyeball grade the coins.

My best deals happen at auctions. Four times this year I have bought coins for less than face. The best was $32.50 of silver Washington quarters this past spring for $29.00. Three weeks ago I bought $8.50 face of Canadian quarters for $6.00, and two lots of (2) 1000 grain silver bars (2000 grains each lot) for $22.50 per lot. Plenty of other great deals, but its hard to beat buying coins for less than face.

What the heck... I'll post up a "steal" (photos come later). It's a rare die variety cherrypicked from a large lot of type coins - an 1837 half dime LM-2 (rarity 5).

There were other pleasant surprises. I'll post them up when I can.

OK look, I've about had it with this nonsense. Here we have another perfectly good thread and this crap has to surface yet again. But let me explain.

Krispy - your comment was harmless. It IS an oxymoron. I find no fault or anything wrong with what you said.

BNB - as I said, it is an oxymoron. But here's a large part of the problem. I have a friend who signs all of his emails with a signature line that goes something like this - if you look for the good in people, you will find it.

However, the reverse is also true. If you look for the bad in people, you will find it. And that's what you seem to do BNB. No matter what somebody says to you, you get all defensive about it. You just have to read it in such a way as to think that they are knocking you, attacking you, insulting you or something along those lines. You absolutely cannot take a comment for what it is.

Yeah I know, you have had issues with some here. And in those cases I have even stuck up for you. But you even do the same thing with me. You take just about everything that I say to you in exactly the opposite way that it is intended. Never once have I attacked you, knocked you or insulted you. I have however on many occasions offered you well thought out constructive criticism, and sometimes just plain old tips, that will help you become better at this hobby. But almost without exception you choose, and strees that, choose to take it that I am insulting you or attacking you in some way. You do it - not me. One of these days you have got to realize that, that is YOUR choice !

Do yourself a favor - get over it. As my friend says - if you look for the good in people, you WILL find it.

And Dave, while I understand that what you are saying has good intentions behind it - it doesn't help. That goes for everybody. All it does is to fan the flames.

So here's the deal. From now on in any thread, ANY THREAD, statements posted by ANYBODY about ANYBODY that I find to be deliberately worded to be argumentative or insulting - those statements are going to be deleted and the person making them is going to get an infraction. Same goes for those who IMO fan the flames. And infraction points add up. Get enough and you are temporarily banned. Get more after that and you are gone forever - forever.

I'm sick and tired of this. You all, every damn one of you know better. And I'm &^%$#@ ! And me being &^%$#@ is absolutely not a good thing. You are not a bunch of school children. But if you continue to insist on acting like a bunch of school children then I will damn well treat you that way.

This stops here and now. And you better believe I mean it.

    Interesting comments, as they say:
Why can't we just get along.

Sure, I don't agree with everyone, perhaps anyone, but those who I don't agree with, I just accept that they are wrong, and i am right.

    Come on childern, play nice.

You know, I got Krispy's pun. Buying/steal is an oxymoron alright?? Ha ha, I get it.. But I genuinely just want to hear people's steals.. Maybe I mixed two words together and formed an oxymoron, ok great.. but that's really not the point of this thread..i'm sorry i put steal and buy together... i just want to inspire people to share their true steals this year.. maybe my word choices caused an oxymoron, but come on, do we really need to focus on that over the core essence of the thread? i hope not

I agree with the administrator. This tread started as a best year find and now it has turned into something different. BNB you have every right to say and defend your self as you choose, but this is a chat forum that should not be taken overly too serious. With all the personal remarks going back and forth it takes away from the original tread. With that said I bought a trade token for $100 and sold it the same day for $400.

...and now back to our regularly scheduled thread... (I hope)

I bought two bags of BU Lincoln cents (1000 total) the first of December at a coin show for $40. The dealer probably thought they were stealing from me cause I know they were over-priced.

But I have spent a HUGE amount of time going slowly through the coins, sorting them by date, putting the best into 2X2's--having to put in an order for a whole box of 2X2's to continue--and still have a lot of looking to do. I've found two errors, but don't know that much about errors, so they're set aside for now. Plus I'm learning a lot about individual years--weak strikes, old dies, etc.

So I'll end up with pretty much a whole winter of entertainment for $40. Now that's a steal.

Mine has to be my 1970 proof set I bought this year during a weekend of my buddy pushing me around yard sales and flea markets. I did not realize until i was here on CT that I indeed had a 1970 proof dime with no "S". That is my find of a lifetime!!!:kewl:

I have always been a big fan of the 1915-S Panama Pacific Exposition commemorative coins, the silver half dollar is my hands down favorite from the series and I found a very nice example certified by PCGS as AU-58. But my steal of the year was the $2.50 Pan-Pac gold piece which is extremely rare with less than 7000 coins minted. I never thought I could afford one.

Lo and behold I found one on eBay being offered by an Oregon pawn shop in a 2x2 flip. It looked real and I won it for about $400, quite a bit of money for me as I am not rich.

It arrived, I looked it over and it sure appeared real. I weighed it and the weight was right on the money. It looked lightly cleaned but for the money I expected at least that.

I sent it to ANACS (this was before NGC slabbed cleaned coins) and it came back as "AU-55 Details - Ex-Jewelry/Cleaned".

As an AU-50 example is worth about $1500 I think this qualifies as a steal.....

Congratulations on getting the famous hippocampus coin. When I took an ANA class, there was some required reading and there were a few cool stories that described the land-sea beast depicted on your coin. Since that reading, I’ve always wanted to own one.
