My grade would be AU-50 with the added comment that it may have been dipped. It might just be the picture's exposure, but the color is on the pale side. A lot of these coins have been dipped. It's the exception, not the rule, to find one that is original.

Overall, this is a really nice piece. Charlotte and Dahlonega gold is a lot different form other areas. Quite often AU is the best grade you can find or afford.

Since it was expensive, the seller is giving me time to have a local expert check the coin and offering a 30 day money back guarantee if I'm not satisfied.... I found a few ungraded ones, but not with the same guarantee.

 

AU-55?

 

I would understand the grade. I personally believe they overlooked an old cleaning, which they are want to do with C and D gold, like CC, so would have no major problems with the grade.

 

I can't see where the coin is hairlined. Therefore, the word "cleaned" does not really apply to this piece. There are collectors who are totally obsessed with the concept of “originality” to the point were they will buy a dark, and in my opinion, ugly, piece of gold. Sometimes they get burned and buy a piece that has a coating iodine on it.

You might look at this piece. Could it have been lighted a bit over the last 168 years? Maybe, but also maybe not. This gold after all, and gold does not react to the vast majority of chemicals, including most acids. It’s not a definitive call. One thing for sure is that this coin has Mint State sharpness. Despite the fact that 1853 is probably the most common date for a Dahlonega $5 gold, that is quite remarkable.



This coin has obviously been dipped. I knew that when I bought it. The question is, how much are you willing to spend to get a very scarce coin that Dahlonega collectors consider to be a one year type. (Liberty Head $5 gold with the mint mark on the obverse.). I opted to spend a bit less.

 

You need to give people a little longer to GTG. 24 hrs. is about standard. My guess would have been AU53.

 

WOW...late here too, but a solid AU55.

 

I think I'll post my next potential purchase up here for feedback before I drop $4K or more on some Charlotte gold since I plan to stay in the AU 55 or better grade.........appreciate the feedback from all.....

Sorry, but you will never find a coin like that in an EF holder these days. I thought at one time that I could find a Charlotte or Dahlonega coin in an EF that would please me, but that is almost impossible. Most of them are VF-30s using the older standards at best.

 

My local dealer agreed with the AU 55 grade.
