There was a coin reform in 348 which improved the quality of the AE coins. Several new types had legends "FEL TEMP REPARATIO" (Happy times are here again!). They are very collectible for being inexpensive, reasonably large, well-engraved, and available in many varieties from various mints. By 355 the reformed types had gotten smaller and smaller and their quality had declined dramatically. Then, when only Constantius II and Julian (the Apostate) ruled, a new type was introduced. 16-15 mm. 1.87 grams. Constantius II. DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG SPES REIPVBLICE, emperor standing holding globe and reversed spear SMNΓ RIC VIII Nicomedia 112, page 482, the second of two issues in 355-361 (after which Julian ruled alone). I think collecting all the AE types of (one or more) Constantinian rulers is an excellent theme that won't break the bank. This type is not rare, but it is hard to find this nice. Show us anything related!
These coins seem to be very common in rough shape but they’re certainly hard to find in good shape! I have probably 10 coins of this type from various mints… this one and another of Julian (not photographed) are my best. …also even if they happen to be nice, they’re usually dark, small and hard to photograph… so you don’t have any good pictures. Constantius II Cyzicus RIC 117
Poor photo but one none the less Constantius II Mint: Nicomedia 348 to 351 AD AE 2 Obvs: DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG, Emperor holding globe. Revs: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Constantius with two captives and holding Chi Rho standard.SMNЄ 20mm, 3.8g Ref: RIC VIII 67
I have a very cute small one just 14.5mm. Oddly, I can't find the SCON mintmark listed on Wildwinds or in Van Meter.
The type seems to have been introduced in 358, possibly for Constantius II's quintricennalia, at some point towards the end of the festive time in November. At least this is what Depeyrot and Callu consider.
