Found two relatively large bronze coins at my local coin shop in the ancient bin.. anyone have any knowledge on these? Pretty worn.
Probably this one. Faustina II, AD 147-175. Roman Æ as or dupondius, 12.05 g, 25.3 mm, 12 h. Rome, AD 156-158. Obv: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, bare-headed and draped bust, right. Rev: AVGVSTI PII FIL S C, Venus Victrix standing facing, head left, holding Victory on extended right hand and resting left hand on shield, set on helmet. Refs: RIC 1389a; BMCRE 2202; Cohen 17; Strack 1333; Sear 4721.
I think that the first coin may actually be Sabina (Hadrian’s wife)...many of her portraits just look like Hadrian with no beard and longer hair. Maybe something like this type? RIC 1047 with Concordia reverse https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/sabina/RIC_1047.jpg
@Shea19...I'm still not convinced...... Could well be a Fortuna reverse aswell? The shape at the back of the head.... I think I can just see the remnants of the laureate at 12 o'clock? Also the flick of hair above the forehead? But I do see 'likes' have been posted by people with more experience than me so I'll bow to their better judgement.....Paul
@Spaniard , I agree that it could be Hadrian as well. To me, the portrait looks more like Sabina with long hair, but it could just be a laureate bust of Hadrian with some encrustations...really tough to tell with this much wear.
I think it's Hadrian, not Sabina, because she doesn't have the big curl of hair at the front of her coiffure. See these, for example.
