I was reaching in my pocket today and as I'm looking thru my quarters I realize something didn't look right. After closer inspection, I looked at this coin and I thought what the heck? This looks like Nixon, anyways I finally focused better and realized that it was a Euro coin from Spain. :D I think it's from Spain, it says Espana. Nice enough to add to my world collection, anyways. It's really a nice perk to find something in your change. Anyone use these Euros or have any? This is my second Euro, my other one is from England. :eat:

Nice find. It's odd that a store clerk could think thats a quarter and pass it off as such, although with all the state quarters and gold dollars etc. floating around they probably just assumed it was a new quarter.

It does look like Nixon! :D I saw one of these that someone had carved into Homer Simpson!

I found a 2 Euro cent in a CoinStar once.

Yeah, you're right. I don't even know where I picked it up from as I've been doing so much shopping. Normally I go thru my change right away but it got passed me for a bit. My eyes aren't what they used to be. :D

Sure, I use them every day. What you got is the first Spanish type; the current pieces have the same portrait of King Juan Carlos but the updated map on the other side. The new ones, as from next year, have that map and only minor modifications on the national side.

I strongly doubt that. :D The UK has nothing to do with the euro. Maybe you got a euro coin (ie. from a euro country) while you were in England?

Chrisild, I got a 1 Euro from Cyprus the other day when I was in Frankfurt, was kind of surprised to see it. Good thing I had to imbibe in that German favourite - Marzipan!

I get the 2 Euro cents from time to time, not a bad find when you consider they are worth almost 3 US cents. Most of the ones I get in change in the USA are from Germany and France.

Bummer, I get hardly any non-euro change here. Well, one time I actually had a Thai 10 baht coin (€2 lookalike) but that was about it. The piece is certainly worth less than 2 euro but heck, I am a collector and sometimes hoarder. :)

The 1 and 2 cent coins, well, in my opinion they are just a nuisance. But I do like the edge of the 2 ct piece.

As for Spain, fortunately they do not have that rule about the monarch having to be on every coin. Which also means they can issue €2 commems without having to depict Juan Carlos. I am looking forward to this one (see attachment) which comes in a few weeks. Shows the mezquita/cathedral in Córdoba ...

When I was in Kyiv on Tues or Wednesday I got a Russian 1 Kopek from 2006 masquerading as a Ukrainian Kopek, only the Ukrainian coin is worth three times as much - but still only worth 8 to the USA cent.

    in change

I finally got a District of Columbia quarter in change. Denver mint. Haven't seen any territorial quarters except in coin stores.

Sometimes I get Canadian coinage in my change but never anything like that. Very cool.

Same here, but I think it was a philly mint.

As to the OP I pulled a United Arab Emirate coin from change a couple of weeks ago. I believe it is a 1 dirham and at one point I even found the date, but can not remember what it was.

Actually I got it from my brother in law and he had just left England so that's where I thought it came from. My bad, he had visited other countries as well so thx for the heads up. Maybe I'll post a pic later. :D

  15. I would be very surprised to ever recieve a Euro in change here. What with them not being the same size and shape of American coinage. In 2009 my mom recieved a quarter (equivalent) from Panama in change, and I found a Bahamas five cent issue in a roll I was given for my birthday, as well as the usual supply of 10 or more Canadian cents a year. I also found a Canadian 10 cent issue on the ground. It was quite a lucky find, as it was in a parking lot in Lake George NY, and must have been dropped earlier that day as it was not damaged from weather (it snowed the day before) and it was not run over. Even better, it was a date I didn't have for my collection (2005) and the only date in that time range I didn't have! It was lucky, I believe, for me that it did snow the day before, as landing in the snow is likely what prevented it from getting damaged on contact with the ground. I happened to spot it as I was walking as I saw it reflect the sunlight. If it had not recently snowed, I would have been looking ahead instead of down and missed it totally. I also nabbed a US cent the same day, close but not related to the dime. It had clearly been sitting out in the elements for some time but I brought it home anyway.

I do have a little stash of the Euros but none of them were recieved in change, I have a friend in Ireland who absolutely HATES the Euro, and mails me a small selection of them from time to time. Most of them I was able to get from people who live in the Euro range and sent them to me.

I was really surprised to find that I got a few Euros in my 3 pound sack of world coins I got for Christmas yesterday. Among them I got my first Italian Euro and my first three German Euros, as well as additions to my Spanish and Irish collection of Euros. I actually, thanks to my previously mentioned friend, have more Irish Euros then pre-Euro issues, that is the only country in that position in my collection.

I may not much like the concept of the Euro, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to collect them! :)

I've received euros in change before here, usually the 1 euro coin.

  17. Hey Fretboard, I found this image on the World Coin Gallery site, under the "See Current circulating coins of the world" section. Might help you ID the coin you thought was British? (unless it was one of the non-original countries using the Euro)

    Euros in change

Up until 3 years ago, I used to go to Europe at least once/year (work) and tried to get as many differenct Euro coins in change as possible. I was able to nearly fill up the entire Dansco Euro book (Austria, Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) except for Luxembourg (Which I had to buy at the Long Beach, CA show) and I had to get some of the Portuguese coins from a friend who went to Lisbon and buy the 1¢ and 2¢ Finish coins (which don't circulate) in order to complete the 96 coin set. More than half are in UNC condition. The net value of it is around $70, but it now serves as a reminder of the various places I visit.

To me, the fun of collecting in part are the stories behind the coin(s).

Alright, I took a pic of my other Euro and here it is. They should make a gold coin like this. I think it's really cool with the gold tone and the man like design on it. :kewl:

    British euros

I think the OP mentioned a British euro. There are some pattern coins out there claiming to be such a thing. None of them are real coins with any legal tender value anywhere.
