Not sure if this is an error or damage after the mint. My son found this in his pile of change, I just wanted to reach out to the forum before going to assess with a coin expert. It’s less embarrassing and less of a waste of time if this is simply damage on a coin, if I find out here rather than going all the way to an expert to show it to. At first I was thinking it was a cud error, but I feel it’s too big. And if a cud error is basically a void in a die from a piece breaking off, I wonder how that would be the case with this... it’s a Roosevelt dime from 2000, wondering if this is a known issue, or simply messed up? Please be kind, it’s my first post the “blemish” doesn’t appear to be added on, it’s completely bonded to the coin. At first I thought it might’ve been some weird slag melted on, but to me it really just looks like it’s one with the coin... I suppose I could weigh it to see if it’s consistent with other dimes? Don’t know if that would be helpful? I can measure on a pretty minute scale if that sounds helpful?
Okay. Welcome first of all. Secondly, I think it's just PMD or Post mint Damage of some sort . No further investigation necessarily .
First welcome to the neighborhood! As others have stated, it's just post-mint damage (PMD). Finding true Mint errors in circulation is not as easy as some people might think. Oh, sure, there are some very, very minor errors like misaligned dies (MAD) or grease-filled dies, and you can find them by the handful. Here is my favorite error that I found in a Mint bag. The Mint struck 19.5 million of the 2001-D Kennedy, and this coin is one of only two that are known to exist for this date/mm. Now, that's rare!
