Hello, I see that there are coin shows in Fort Dodge, IA and the monthly show in Omaha.Have any of you been to these shows? Is it worth a long drive?
Can you think of any other reason to drive there...then go to the show while you're there? For instance, do you need a new vehicle and can get your best deal near where the coin show is? ...or is there a State Fair going on around the same time? That's how I do it.
State Fair in Des Moines. I know since it is on the farm of my ancestor, my mother's great uncle. You can still visit their house on property, the Thornton house. I grew up 7 blocks from there. The DM coin club always has an annual show which would be worth going to. Unfortunately, there is never such a show in mid August when the state fair is on. I know its more of a drive, but Chicago ANA in Aug would be probably the largest coin show you could ever attend.
Nice to have relatives memorialized in State Parks and other venues. My mother comes down through the very early McMillan's in Iowa. McMillan Park in Mt. Pleasant is where the Old Thrashers Reunion is held annually.
My Great Grand Pa was with Custer. His last words were, “ I don’t understand, they were friendly at the dance last night”. He was a fine fellow all dressed up in that Arrow Shirt. Remember Arrow Shirts…….?
The monthly Omaha show has 15-20 dealers, fairly good variety of coins raw and slabbed. At least one currency dealer. I was at the show 2 months ago and purchased several Walking Lib halves to help fill my set.
There's one in New Hampshire next Friday Saturday. NH coin and currency expo at the doubletree Manchester NH. If you're into driving a bit.
I decided not to punt and make the road trip to Fort Dodge, IA today. I need to do something today. Who knows, maybe I’ll find something I like! The drive is a little over an hour so that’s no big deal.
Have a good time. Let us know if you find anything interesting. I quit going to shows because they were too much of a clique gathering.
I can see that inspector but for my own well being I don’t want to get into a potential habit of over buying an bidding online. There’s absoluely nothing wrong with it, I just gotta get my girls through college.
Fair enough, and its a nice but warm day for a drive. It is nice to go in person somewhere and talk to others about coins. In the spring and fall there is a large show in Minneapolis each year at the Earl Brown center. Let me know if you will attend and we can meet up.
I'm camping this weekend so I can't go to Fort Dodge which is fine cuz its seven hours from me. I don't go to shows in the summer because there isn't much and I'm camping anyway. I like to go to shows in the fall and winter though.
Well it was a beautiful drive and a nice show where I got a 20d walker in F+ and a 47 walker in. mS 65 cac. The big news is that dealer inventory is down and prices are general,y in the upswing
