PCGS slabs that 'wiggle'

I have a franklin half that was slabbed by PCGS. My concern with this coin is that it wiggles in the slab. By this i mean that it moves ever so slightly when you jiggle the slab. Is this an indication that the original coin was taken out with a new coin inserted? or just an indication of a porly slabbed coin on PCGS's part?

its probably in the old "rattler" pcgs slabs... you may want to think about cracking it and submitting it again, it would probably come back with a higher grade...

I think this is the best i can do at taking pictures. The surface clutter i think is just marks on the slab. I dont see anything on the coin when i look at it, but i dont see anything on the slab either.....

I have never heard of PCGS 'rattle' slabs before this... i am guessing this is a fault in their earlier slabs maybe??

    yup... thats a rattler!

usually these older slabs = a good chance of upgrade.
looking at the grey sheet the coin in this holder is worth around $13.00, a proof 65 is $20.00 so it is probably not worth re-grading. if it had cameo i would have it regraded, a high grade ( proof 67+ cameo ) franklin can be worth a lot of money to the right people.

I would send it in to PCGS for a re-holder if the rattling concerns you and you want to keep it slabbed. NGC charges $5.00 for a re-holder, so i am guessing that PCGS has a similar service.

    oh, and nice coin!

Here is a site that shows the slabs from day one to now and how they changed...we also have a member of this forum who has a book out about Slabs...

The rattle shouldn't hurt the coin...at least I have never seen a rattle slab hurt a coin...but its up to the person who has the coin if they want to re-holder it.

I would rather re-holder it, i would not want the rattle to wear down any high points. i wasnt sure if the TPG's had any reduced price re-holder option. I sure as heck didnt want to pay full price to slab an under $20 coin!! But to get it re-holdered they wouldnt re-grade it. Lookign at the coin, does anyone think it would/might grade higher?? If so, it might pay to get it re-graded.....

They should re-holder it for FREE. It is their faulty holders that causes the rattle so they should fix the problem without charge.

the rattle is no big deal compared to the extra value these old holders bring. this older holder is a very good and desirable thing

Thats it...Cameron is a great guy and works for ICG...Conder101 is out "in House" expert on slabs...

    Sorry I forgot the link.....

I think the rattle is more on the rims than the front and back of the coin so the high marks shouldn't matter...

The rattle may be a little annoying but it has never been known to cause any damage to the coin in the holder.

Yes they do have a lower cost tier for simply reholdering the coin, but in addition to the $5 fee to reholder you also have to consider the expense for postage and insurance to send the coin to the service and then back to you. When you add those costs in it is going to cost you close to $20 to reholder a $13 - $20 coin.

The links to the threads on the different PCGS and NGC slabs that havebeen produced are:

    PCGS slabs

    NGC slabs

Both of these need to be updated with the most recent varieties.
