Here is a lovely 1880-S Morgan I just added to the collection. The coin is graded by PCGS. Guess the Grade! Also, a shoutout to @Morgandude11 who helped me track down this coin. Of course...you know the grade so no cheating.
Lovely coin! Great detail in the hair, normal bag marks over the face and a really nice reverse. MS 65 DMPL
Certainly no less than 64 and DMPL very likely. I want to call it 65 but the few marks on the neck give me pause. Aw, what the heck, 65 DMPL.
Looks 64 PL at minimum...may well be 65 and DMPL. Sometimes close-up photos expose so many minute imperfections that it makes it look far worse than in-hand, eye-appeal images. I'm sure this is a beauty.
I will not guess the grade, as I helped Richie find the coin, so I know about it. I’ve also seen the very accurate seller’s pictures, which show it to be a stunning coin. It is from a very reliable dealer. It has a sledgehammer strike, super luster, and great cameo, with very minimal distractions for its type. The reflectivity is great, and overall, I think he made an incredibly smart purchase. In my opinion, I think it is borderline undergraded. Absolutely a beautiful example of that date, and type.
I went a little lower than the group, at 63PL. There are some pretty severe marks on the cheek, neck, and obverse field. There's also quite a few smaller marks scattered around. Looks like a nice coin, so I hope for your sake its a 64PL.
I completely agree with you. I think this coin is borderline undergraded as well and if it were any other date than an 80-S or an 81-S it would be a point higher. What struck me first when I got the coin in hand was the strike. This coin is the definition of full struck. The details are stunning. I believe my photos give a really good in-hand view of this coin. There is some slight haziness on the left side field on the obverse and a couple (non-distracting) hits on the neck. There is also a very small hit on the Eagle's breast.
The cheek on this coin is actually very clean. What looks like marks on the cheek are actually small breaks in the frost catching the light. This is a pretty common effect with frosty Morgan's. The only real hits on the obverse are those on the neck.
I am saying MS 64 and not going with a PL only because I have had PCGS not grade the PL designation if there are any signs of the frosted area on the face not complete or a little shiny. I believe it is a PL but may not have received that, thanks
I'm going with 63 PL possible DMPL but, hard to tell with the pictures. Seems to be to many hits to be much better than a 63 but, wouldn't be surprised to see it in a 64 PL slab.
