This dime was included in my Legacy set. My daughter seems to have walked off with my loupe and does not know where it went... so i cannot tell if the damage/dark spot is ressessed into the coin or not. Assuming it is... has anyone seen this type of damage, and if so - what would cause it in a proof coin ? considering the price this set cost - any information telling what the spot is would be helpfull.
Normally on a Proof coin I'd say it's a break in the luster - it looks dark because you are seeing the darker metal underneath the cameo. But with that shape, it looks like a ding that would have had to occurred after striking. Get a better look at it and see if it is incuse - that will tell the story.
I would be just as concerned with the beard he seems to be growing. Or is that on a shild holding the coin?
