So I don't know how well you can see in the pictures. On the obverse across the upper area of liberty's head there are those dark spots. Under the loupe the spots are pitted. I'm guessing this is some kind of corrosion? I placed it in some hardware store acetone in a glass jar yesterday. The black is nearly gone now compared to what it was. The pitting obviously isn't. I'm not concerned about it being details or whatever. I just want to prevent further damage. IMO the coin is still a nice looking coin. If that is corrosion is there anything else I can do to help prevent it? Once I get done with the acetone and distilled water rinse I will place it in an air tite. I am like you. As long as I have the history in my hands, the small stuff doesn’t concern me in the least…… I think you have already done all you could do to mitigate any further pitting. Get her good and dry, snap her up in an Airtight and enjoy her.

Definitely corrosion. Maybe an application of Verdi-Care or Classic Coin Conditioner to protect it from further damage.
I will admit I have never used Classic Coin so I'm not sure how well it works and I have only used Verdi-Care on Large Cents so I'm not sure how well it works on silver but it is listed for use.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yes, that appears to be some environmental damage, or corrosion. The rest of the coin looks nice, so its a shame about that area.

Curious as to how you came about to own the coin? The damage seems to be over a long period of time. Hopefully, your actions will prevent further damage and you can add it to your collection. Thanks for the share.

I got it on eBay auction. It was photographed through a 2x2 but I was pretty sure it was going to look like it does when I got it. I think some people are afraid to do anything to them. But I think the acetone needed done. I love the 07/08 design. And this is even has a nice strike for the year. Similar details coins that look a lot worse because of cleanings were selling for what I paid for this one. So it's not a loss.
