What am i missing about these coins? I consider them glorified shiny subway tokens with no intrensic value above the $0.25. Can someone educate me please?

only 10 million of each design minted. Put directly into circulation, none sold through the mint. I believe it is the only general circulation coin made with a W mint mark. so if you wanted one with your collection, you had to find it or buy it on secondary market.

I can't agree with this statement. Many CT members and other coin forum members that took the dive and actively searched for W quarters found them. Even starting this year, still finding them. Perhaps some people thought 10 million out of 1.65 billion in 2019 would be easy to find and just turn up after buying every cup of coffee and for some people one did just turn up for them just that easy, but that wasn't the norm and it's still not, it's just not in the math of it.

People that seach for them find them. I haven't heard of one person that didn't find one after actually trying and actively searching rolls of quarters from their bank to ensure they'd find at least one.

There were 4.4 billion quarters minted in 2019 and 2020 total. 20 million of them Ws.
That's 1 in 220 quarters. Now that they all should be in general circulation the odds got even worse than that. Either way though it was 20 million and there's 328 million Americans so clearly everyone can't find one, much less find all 10 and have a set. It's only possible for 2 million people to do make a set of 10 and that's not even probable to happen 2 million times.

I still haven't found my first 2009D nickel and they made 46,800,000 of them. I know if I spent a few weeks on nickels only I'd probably find one though, last week I finally found a 2009D Dime by chance searching 3 rolls when I've searched hundreds of dollars in dimes year after year and came up empty.

Some things require some effort if you want it. Just the way it goes. The other option is buying them I guess but people that did the work are gonna want to be rewarded for their effort generally also.

  11. So I won't speak of the success or lack thereof for the US Mint or coin dealers regarding the W program, but I would say it's been a wonderful experience for me personally. I used to collect coins with my Dad 40-50 years ago - he's been dead for 22 years now. During Covid I found some old books of pennies and nickels and it rekindled my interest. After diving in for a bit I learned about the W program and became laser focused on finding some. Admittedly, it's gone a lot further than I thought it would, but the joys I've experienced sorting through coins and the excitement I get when finding one has been a blast! Along the way I've met some wonderful people and have made new friends, both in person and online. I've been remembering (and telling others) stories about the time my Dad and I would talk coins. Now, my youngest son, who will enlist in the Air Force in a few months has also taken an interest. So, for me, this silly W program has been a blessing and a joy to be a part of.

Wonderful story. It's the best argument yet for the whole program. But I still don't like playing games with mintmarks like leaving them off sometimes and putting them on sometimes. I didn't like it in 65-67 and don't like it now. But as I said in a prior post, the W program was at least intended for circulation coins.

Are you tracking them? I understand there is a large gap between the delivered dates (tracker) and the Received dates indicating a significant time spent in the in box before being checked in.

Hold it. This is the wrong thread. I was thinking about TPGs leaving the inboxes full.

I thought they would have been here by now as well, but to no avail. I was going to wait to thank everyone all at once as I have received CoinJockey's and another member willing to swap with me but yours has yet to arrive. I'll keep you posted.

I have to especially thank @CoinJockey73 and @Beardigger for their tremendous show of generosity. It is because of them and donating their finds I was able to complete the ATB W series. I am so thankful, especially for Samoa as I just love that bat! Truly, gentlemen, thank you so much for doing something you didn't have to! People here at CoinTalk are the best!

It amazes me what coin collectors manage to become over releases like this. I was aware of the program but didn’t know the details until I read this thread.
First off, if you can’t find them in change and it’s that important for you to have one, spring for the $15 -$20 to get one. For crying out loud. It isn’t even worth the time to spend hours of your life hoping to find one of these. There’s enough out there that you can purchase a graded one for less than what it cost to grade it.
If you find one great. I look for them. Ive watched for them but have also never seen one in change and not surprising. People simply don’t understand how diluted the change supply becomes adding billions of new every year. It becomes as useless as searching for silver. Anybody searching rolls for anything should write out 1 billion on paper and realize more than that is getting dumped out there every year. Knowing this I just can’t get bent out of shape over it wishing I had a new circulating W quarter. If I never get one I don’t care.

@Vess1 You are missing the whole point! Dimeguy didn't become anything but frustrated and he simply expressed that. He would have been perfectly willing to wait and buy them......but I was willing and able to help him of my own free will and let him know I would be happy to do so, as did coinjocky. All we became was good people willing to help where help was needed, and I'll never feel bad about that!
