Happy Portugal Day Everyone! I'm only a day late...and it's not my fault. It's the USPS's! My wife is 1st generation American Portuguese and all the tadpoles are 50% Portuguese so we celebrated by eating Pasteis de Nata, little Portuguese custard pies. Now...on to the coin! It arrived in the mail box just a bit ago so I had to try and get some pictures before the daylight went away. This is coin was minted to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It is minted in 0.800 silver and has a mintage of 200,000. I think I have more colonial issues (esp. Brazil) than Portuguese, but here are a few I have photos of: A group of Ceitils, probably of Manuel I, early 1500s. And a 20 Reis of 1883, Luiz I My wife is Chinese, so we eat a lot of the Chinese version of egg tarts (蛋撻). Only store bought--don't know how to make them, alas. Egg tarts are delicious. Guess they spread to Southern China due to the influence of the Portuguese colony at Macau. A lot of Asian foods have Portuguese influence!
If I weren't bogged down writing case briefs, I'd probably post a few of my Portuguese coins. Regardless, thanks a lot for making me hungry for dessert @furryfrog02.
I have a whole stash of these, even a group with a deteriorating die state over time that have a progressive die breaks and cracks in the die that show up on the coins. Striking coins in cupro-nickel was something that the Portuguese mint had to work on much like other mints when they first started minting coins in cupro-nickel The denomination is just plain cool.
I love those older coins! I need to get myself some of them. That newer Euro coin and those notes are beautiful as well!
My 1935 1 Escudo. I have like the top 7 key dates in 1 Escudo. Couple other Portugal examples. I might post some other pcs after i get some sleep.
Funny because I've been on a bit of a Portuguese kick lately and was thinking I need to find some time to scan my coins and start a thread about it. It's one of my favorite countries to collect from around the early 1900s to the 70s or so. I actually just ordered a lot of 100 1 escudo coins from Portugal on a whim. Unfortunately no better dates in it. That's what you get when you order from the country of the coin's origin. People know what they're doing.
Happy Portugal Day to you and yours @furryfrog02 Here's one from Portugal, 1809 400 reis with an Azores countermark from 1887 (KM 26.2). The hole is unfortunate, but back when I actively collected this sort of thing, I preferred my Azores countermarks with holes - they were affordable, for one thing, and I thought the holes reduced the chance of a fake (fakers tend to like nice host coins - they bring in more money):

I'm working on the 15,16 silvers right now. I just let a set of BU's go by waffling. Primarily because i like tone. Thats a good looking 15. Sorta what I'm looking for.
