Well, the mint had it's head where the sunshine don't reach for awhile, mainly I think because every polititian thinks that they deserve to have their likeness on our money, well I say to heck with that, now they have the quarters programs and hopefully they will notice the huge interest it has drawn to coins in the past few years and make some other changes, which some are in the works.

I agree, that would have been a really nice looking coin. It's JMO but I think the Ike dollar and the SBA were the end of the dollar coin. Incidentally I got an email awhile back from the us mint talking about selling Sacagawea dollars for circulation. Not to trash the Ike or the SBA but unfortunately the public didn't appreciate the two either. That said, I don't know why the mint stopped minting dollar coins for circulation but it looks like they're having second thoughts after all these years have passed.

Oh in a nutshell here's part of the email:
Native American $1 Coins have been made available again on the United States Mint's Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Web site. These circulation-grade $1 coins are available in boxes of ten 25-coin rolls. There is no charge for shipping and handling.

The intended purpose of the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program is to make $1 Coins readily available to the public, at no additional cost, so they can be easily introduced into circulation -- particularly by using them for retail transactions, vending, and mass transit. $1 Coins are 100% recyclable, last for decades and save the Nation money. (Please note: The immediate bank deposit of $1 Coins ordered through this Program does not result in their introduction into circulation and, therefore, does not comply with the intended purpose of the Program.) Quantities are limited. Order now for gifts, or for personal use.
