I'm so sorry for your loss, @octavius. Losing a pet is so hard. My kitty, like so many others who are fortunate enough to live that long, developed renal failure. I kept her kidneys going for a year by giving her subcutaneous saline injections but eventually she let me know it was time to stop. It was heartbreaking. That was 14 years ago and I never adopted another. Maybe someday . Wonderful coins, @TIF. I'm sorry that happened to your kitty. Ziggy's vet has suggested that I should start thinking about giving him saline injections, but I admit I'm a bit reluctant -- I've never given anyone an injection of anything in my life! I also understand not adopting another cat. Ziggy's my first, and right now I can't even imagine wanting another, even though I know most people eventually do.
It wasn't difficult and Tigger didn't seem to mind it much, even though I was using a 16g needle towards the end (larger bore helped get the fluid in faster). If she'd flinched or showed signs of it hurting I might've reconsidered. I'm living with my mom and she has two small dogs. I grew up with dogs and have enjoyed them. I prefer cat but love animals of all types. Right now my "pets" are the squirrels, birds, raccoons, and possums that come to the bird feeder outside my bedroom window .
That sounds absolutely lovely. All I get outside my bedroom window on the sill are standard NYC pigeons. More than once, Ziggy has seen one sitting there and launched himself from my bed at about 60 mph directly against the window screen trying to get it. Splat! I'm lucky he didn't go right through the screen!
