Today was a very tough day. Percival , my cat and best bud of 16 years passed away. I would appreciate it if some of you could post an ancient coin with a depiction of a noble cat, large or small, on it.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. What a lovable, cuddly-looking cat Percival was.

My beloved orange tabby Ziggy, who was 16 in March -- and has been my constant companion during the pandemic -- was diagnosed with terminal, chronic kidney disease a few months ago. So I'm likely to be experiencing the same thing before too much longer. Ziggy is the first pet I've ever had on my own, so this will be new to me.

Here are some noble panthers (probably leopards given the spots), lions, and a tigress.

    Very sorry for your loss.
This was my boy, when he was very young. Unfortunately I had to give him to somebody else for adoption about a year later because I had to move out and there was no possibility to have a cat. Broke my heart.

And an image of a big cat

    upload_2021-6-10_13-42-43.png

    Ionia. Miletos circa 525-475 BC.
    Diobol AR
    7 mm, 1,07 g
Late 6th-early 5th century BC. Twelfth stater or diobol Head of roaring lion right. Rev. Star-shaped floral ornament within incuse square. Klein 426-427. SNG Kayhan 468-475. SNG Von Aulock 2082. Sear 3532

One of the coins I really wanted in my collection. This one is worn, especially the obverse, and doesn't have the lion details properly anymore, but every time I tried to bid on better coins I was simply smoked (not sure why as they were usually low end VFs). This one is a good addition - not sure if lion facing right is scarcer, but I usually see them facing left.

Sorry for your loss @octavius. As a fellow cat lover I know what you're going through.

I lost Snickers (the calico in the photo below) 2 years ago from the same type of kidney issues @DonnaML's Ziggy is dealing with.

Does anyone know of an ancient coin which shows a domestic (small) cat? It would seem that there should have been on on some coin of Egypt but I do not know it.

This is supposed to be a snow leopard (based on what lived in the Central Asian area that made the coin).

@Broucheion, that's great. I didn't realize that there's a Roman Egyptian Nomos coin showing a domestic cat, although it certainly makes sense.

Not a coin, but here's my ancient Egyptian amulet of Bastet:

Egypt, pale blue Faience Amulet of Bastet, 26th Dynasty to Ptolemaic Period, circa 663-300 BCE. 34 mm. high. Purchased from Harmer Rooke Numismatists Ltd., New York City, Feb. 26, 1990.
