PCGS moderns, especially US moderns, do better in the market

Agree. If you are gonna submit with intent to sell at some point, this type of thing would be best in PCGS, that's where the modern market i's and people buying them @Michael Wuensch , you probably would have done much better had you been looking in 2019 and 2020 but that's not bad at all for this year although a lot of hunting! Like 80 boxes. Wow.

Those chart numbers are incredible. I hope to be there, someday. I think I've found just over 50. I'll tally at week's end. Thanks for the info.

Your numbers are insane! I just started looking myself, on April 19 of this year, and I've found 65 W mint marks as of today, and I've gone through over $43,000 in quarters, since then. You're strictly finding those CRH? That's amazing. Wish i could offer you a swap, but I've only found 2 AMP and only 1 Samoa (bats)... good luck to you!
(I know i posted yesterday, i just wanted to fill some stuff in)

He's doing a similar amount of a search that you are, just got luckier maybe even got a few fresh boxes with more than average. They did "double up" on the first releases of 2019 and 2020 again. The first release 2019 Lowell, and 2020 Samoa were delayed.

Lowell W release shared the time frame with American memorial park, Samoa shared the time frame with Wier Farm.

Those boxes, had half the release time than the other 3 designs of the year to distribute the Ws in, as a result those designs were "heavy" in W numbers in the boxes.

So, Lowell boxes don't have Ws, Samoa boxes don't have Ws. AMP boxes can have Lowell W or AMP W but not both in the same box.
Weir Farm can have Samoa or Weir Farm Ws but not both in the same box. Each design was for roughly 10 weeks with a drop on release day, and a 2nd drop around 5 weeks after, the first designs of each year had 5 weeks to put out all 2 million Ws, the remaining 3 designs each year had 10 weeks and the full run to do it.

I hope what Im trying to say makes sense because I feel like I'm writing in circles. Lol.
The AMP boxes and Weir Farm boxes were W heavy and this could be why his numbers are higher, just lucked into one of those boxes, clearly not the AMP box with AMP Ws apparently. LOL

  8. @CoinJockey73 Where do you live? Here is another portion of my spreadsheet.
I track the date and from which bank I get the rolls. Each entry has it's own hit rate, too, so I can see if any particular bank has more Ws on average. I've found several mint state post-64 quarters and about a dozen silvers. It's been a blast going thru all these and I even sort through some halves occasionally. I've got a great banker!

Were any of your boxes uncirculated new rolls of 2019 or 2020? Or just finding them one here or there along the way?

I'm in the metro NY area. As of today, i think I've found 29 Marsh-Billings alone, lol. It's 65 total, i believe. I can post up my totals this weekend, see if i find anymore before Saturday.

  11. @John Burgess That is amazing info you have! How do you find all that out? It's been a crazy and confusing search, that's for sure. One time I got 2 boxes of uncirc Marsh, and found only 7 in both boxes. Another time, I got 3 boxes of M-Bs with ZERO W's, but I did pull more than 100 that were either improperly annealed or had significant striations on either face. Then i watch an RFT video where he had 2 MB boxes and found 57!!!!!!! That always happens to the other guy.

  12. All came from boxes or rolls I get from various banks. Occasionally I get boxes of all 2020 uncirc, but mostly mixed. Look for my other post above. So how do you know all this stuff about relase dates and such? I've been very curious about it, especially after getting those 3 boxes of MB with zero Ws while watching a youtuber find 57 just a few months earlier.

    @Michael Wuensch
I've been searching since 2019, although covid shut my hunts completely down like March/April 2020, and read as much as I could on the W quarter releases information on the Internet.
I'll find an article like this:
    https://www.govmint.com/coin-author...-national-parks-quarters-with-V75-privy-marks
    Then:
    1. American Samoa, Feb 3rd
    2. Weir Farm, April 6
    3. Salt River Bay, June 1st
    4. MBR, Aug 31st
    5. Tallgrass, Nov. 16th

    Then I find these:
    https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...rter-for-american-samoa-will-be-released-last

    https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...-distribution-for-first-2020-w-quarter-dollar

First article says there will be a delay to Samoa Ws. On the 2nd article it announces it will release with Weir Farm. BUT this article, towards the bottom has some more interesting information... it has release cities for weir farm.

If you dig in articles for 2019 or 2020 Ws release dates, release cities, And spend some time you can find the cities that got the deliveries of each design, even the dates, each design release period had 2 drops. The list of drop cities changes from coin to coin but there are lists for each one. It did me no good in 2020 with covid lock down and the coin shortage nonsense but the information is available.

So, that's how I know these things. A lot of digging and reading and figuring out what the info means.

As far as boxes with none, my theory is, the armored carriers the Fed calls "terminals" that hold these coins in each city for the federal reserve, do the rolling and distriubtion. Each "terminal" has their own warehouse method and techniques of inventory control as well as distribution procedures.

One might work on FIFO and dump the whole pallet to be rolled at once and distributed right away after receiving it.
If this is the case they would be found early and evenly distributed mostly in all boxes made from the ballistic bag pallet.

Another might work on LIFO and not rotate and even have the sorting and rolling machine half full of circulated coins and top off with the ballistic bag pallet just dumping in the top of it and doing the other half on a 2nd run.
And if that's the case then you have the top of bag boxes that are W heavy mixed with circulated coin and the 2nd half that have none or very few but all shiny new coin.

Another might just make up some boxes from the pallet to get through the need for that day pulling scoops off the top and not rolling the entire ballistic bag pallet all at once
Another might run the pallet's of quarters and make boxes and palletized then and rack them for future use and they are sitting there on the terminal shelf never seeing circulation because they keep re-rolling returned circulated coin and it meets their demand and the new stuff is stored if they ever actually need it and easily inventories and free of foreign coins.

All kinds of ways they can do it, to them it's just work and quarters and inventory.

The federal reserve went to contractors and "terminal distribution" at the end of the state quarters. From then on you couldn't go to your bank and order new rolls of a design for quarter's or presidential dollar coins anymore from banks, because the fed isn't doing it anymore, the armored carriers are and the banks just have to take whatever the carriers deliver, there's no more ordering specific new coin rolls.

At this point my bank connections dried up. They all got shifted around to different branches, so I can't get boxes currently even though there no restrictions or "shortage".
Restarting has been hard. I scored $60 in rolled coin last week and was happy to hunt a bit on the weekend even though it was just 4 rolls of quarters, 3 dimes, 2 nickels and 2 cents. It's a start at reestablishing. It's how I was doing it 30 years ago. Lol. Before covid I could get boxes and boxes each week no issue..... time to restart I suppose.

  14. @John Burgess - That's some great info, thanks again. I wish I had started last year! But if the Mint ever does one of these events again, I'll be ready this time!

Hi Michael, :) not sure if they will ever do something like this again, but hope they do also. I was ready and looking from day one, and while fun, searching 1-2 boxes a week, there was a whole lot of striking out, a whole lot of anxiousness and driving around also because I was just turning over $500 over and over again. I did alright, but nowhere near as good as I wanted to, and overall only found 3 designs, only Lowell and AMP W, and I found a 1 2020W by random chance last year in change, Salt River Bay.

here's my totals, I searched most of 2019, honestly if it wasn't for "right place right time" and 2 boxes of new coin, I wouldn't have found this many, I'd of been around
7-11 instead for all that effort.

    Lowell: 3
    American Memorial: 50
    War in the Pacific: 0
    San Antonio Missions: 0
    Frank Church River: 0
    National Park: 0
    Weir Farm: 0
    Salt River Bay: 1
Total West Point Quarters found so far: 54.

Here's the kicker, I have trust issues, a bit of a hermit/misanthrope actually. I thought about trading coins at some point to get the others I'm missing, but too scared of getting ripped off by people I don't know to actually do it, makes me anxious, it's just never gonna happen for me.
I've concluded to maybe selling some on ebay most likely, then buying the ones I'm missing with the proceeds to finish out the sets of 2019-2020. even that though, seems like more of a hassle than just continuing to hunt, but I also know condition is a ticking clock with the coins out in circulation now.

Anyways. I was one of the lucky ones that got a couple boxes of AMP-Ps with AMP Ws in them last week of May 2019, one box had 15, the other box had 32. I picked up 3 other AMP-Ws randomly after that roll hunting. Not the best pictures. but it's my favorite design from the Ws, so I was stoked to find them and memorialized the moment.

And I'm a big fan of this poorly taken picture: LOL

from my avatar icon, probably the best conditioned one, it's definitely lighting at play here, but it might get a + or PL designation, but the obverse leaves some to be desired in Washingtons hair.

That's my story. I was big time into the hunt at the beginning and into 2020, covid just crushed me out of the game, and even killed off my pickup bank connections that I'm just now trying to re-establish.

Yikes! found this website selling W quarters. they are even higher than Ebay and the price they want for the AMP W is insane, I don't know how they sleep at night except on a pile of cash.... Hahahha "our low price" MY FOOT!
I bet they buy from ebay, mark them way up and try to flip them, while also searching their own inventory of rolls.

they are putting a bit of a premium on the Tallgrass and Marsh Billings as well.

    Holy moly!

@John Burgess: what a great design to be sitting on. I'm sure you would have a upper hand in any negotiations. Good job!

Incredible information. Thank you. I don't have the details you do, I'm way B-type, but I'll put mine together this weekend. Compare notes. I've found 8 W so far this week.

    Yeah, I've thought about that....

yeah maybe one day, as it stands I get agita thinking about trusting strangers to be decent folks. I'm in Florida, scam central for the United States. I'm not the type to go meet a rando from Craiglist in a parking lot to make a deal or even throwing a yard sale and my neighbors stopping by. LOL,

I have this idea of going to like, maybe FUN coin show, and trading for what I need there maybe with others looking to trade, but I dunno FUN sounds fun, but it also sounds like stress and anxiety.

who knows one day maybe I'll get the never to actually want to go through with it and give it a go.

CoinCorgi Tell your dog I said hi!

I have found one (1) W quarter in change. My ATB Dansco doesn't have enough blank holes to fit all of the W's so 1 is enough for my ATB "Type Set".
