I picked this one up on EBAY a few days back. Since I don't have it in hand yet, I'll share the PCGS site image. This 1689 (JAN) Shilling was won in a fierce bidding for $128.50, a very good deal in my opinion as only seven are graded by PCGS. Thoughts, comments welcome in advance.
Very nice. These are difficult to get in good condition and some months are harder to get than others. I got this half crown for a fair bit more than $128 with a common month. Since the Battle of the Boyne was in July 1690, the recipients didn't have long to spend them before they were worthless. (I think your January 1689 is actually only 4 months older than my May 1690 according to the Julian calendar). But apparently a large number were struck, and since they weren't worth much, many got discarded. James II Gun Money 'Small' Half Crown, May 1690 Dublin ('James' press). Bronze, 29mm, 11.08g. May with full stop (SCBC 6580B).
I put quite a bit of research into the coinage I collect. As you mentioned Mr. Conduitt, expanding a bit, the month was added to each as a means of paying interest to the troops it paid. Once Edward II regained the throne. So perhaps a large percentage "disappeared" that way? Remelted for British coin? Thanks for sharing your 1690. Beautiful survivor.
