Yes, very nice! I have never posted on the Forvm discussion board, never mind tried to create a gallery. I find the place extremely intimidating -- there seem to be a great many rules and restrictions on what can and cannot be posted, and I never see the kind of casual "show and tell" conversations that we have here. I get the feeling that one has to be an expert to post, and that's obviously something I don't purport to be.

 

Well done starting a gallery. I'm happy to report that my Forum gallery won "Gallery of the Year" for 2020!

It would be good if all ancient coin collectors put their collections online, with good photos, descriptions, weights, diameters and axis reported. The anti-collector lobby points to "unavailability of material for study" as a shot against collecting. Prove them wrong.

 

@Carausius......I've had a gallery there for a few years now and frequently add to it but what I do like about yours are the short write ups....Makes the coin that little bit more interesting!......Will take a leaf out of your book and start to redefine my collection.Thanks.

 

I think you will appreciate having images of your coins on the web. You have quite a variety.

I really like your comments. It is not just a bunch of photos, but includes commentary that helps us see what is interesting about the coins.

 

This is truly an amazing gallery and I frequently check it for new entries.

I also have a Forum gallery noted in my trailer. I have recently been maintaining two galleries. One at Forum, and most recently at CollecOnline (Like I don't have enough to do!) I think both are very good venues for a collection. CollecOnline free version has a few advantages in allowing somewhat larger images, custom fields, PDF reports, and private info (such as my purchase costs, which I use). There is also a somewhat different community to correspond with. Since it is newer it is a smaller community, so it is not as sophisticated as CT, but nicely designed for one-on-one correspondence.

I can't buy coins every day but both of these venues keep me engaged.

 

That's why I put it off for so long from using that community, felt bad about posting my coins, which for most part worn and sub-par since I'm a bottom feeder!
Also I'm not expert in any area (maybe some understanding in South Indian coinage), but I consider myself a jack of all trades master of none type of guy. But I gladly share what I know about a coin!
But who cares! so I just went in and cataloged my coins there, also I wanted to have an online database for my coins, and that site seemed good for me!

 

Nice collection Jay! I left you a comment. There are not many coin web sites where you can create a gallery for your entire collection extensive or not.

 

That Perunjinga Pallavas of Sendamangalam is pretty sweet! Congrats.

There’s still some debate if it is indeed a Perunchinga Pallava coin or Nayakas of Madurai coin, as I once discussed with @dougsmit, although I’m banking on the former since they were a feudatories of the Cholas, and by the 13th century with the decline of Cholas the Pallavas might have become independent and made own coins based on Chola standards, and the crest of Pallavas was a bull.

However the Nayakas came 300 years after them and most of their coins are tiny.

 

That's a shame Donna, many of the people from here started on that forum. I never realized it is intimidating to those it had not been there before. The rules are the same as here but also no mentioning other dealers because it is a dealer owned site. The site owner Joe is Ex Navy Officer and a good fellow.

I do suggest you check out the search engine for discussions, many great collectors some long gone, posted there. It has a lot of great information. About 20 years worth.

As for the gallery, its perfect for those coins you keep locked up or when traveling so you can quickly reference your own collection. It does not cost anything to make a gallery. The only draw back when searching the gallery you have to rely on the owner tagging certain words to make your search come up fully. EG tetarteron, not everyone does this so all of them are not displayed.

I have a profile on FORVM but never got around to making a gallery. I do wish that they let you have sub-folders... it would be nice to have a place to dump some of my images as an online backup.

To Donna's point,

- Discussing price or value is strictly prohibited
- Discussing rarity is frowned upon
- Discussing provenance (purchased from eBay) is frowned upon
- Most discussions there seem to be focused on Numismatic aspects (cataloging, discussing small variants) whereas here it's more history-centric which is what I prefer.

I understand where they come from by wanting to keep the discussions academic (Discussing price is often a slippery slope to an entire forum being hijacked by dealers posting ID requests by the dozen so that they can flip their stock on ebay) but I find it limiting as I've had posts deleted simply for mentioning "This came from an XYZ auction house lot".

 

My current issue with FORVM is that they changed the site a bit and broke all the unicode formatting..Messed up a lot of my entries that I spent a ton of time on. Aside from that, its a great hosting site for coins...

 

I've had similar experiences with them. To be honest, the owner seems obsessed with selling his stock; every post I've made on there asking if a coin is genuine or not seems to have him say "Well if you buy from Forvm then the coins are genuine", or something similar. I mean, they probably are genuine, but people aren't going to buy from you just because they use your forum. Forums are free and, while users are encouraged to donate, nagging them will get you nowhere. The first step to getting donations/sales is that the user has to enjoy being on a forum, which is where he has sadly failed.

I've even had nasty personal messages from him because I hadn't bought anything. He even put restrictions on my account, and changed my flair to "parasite" (or something like that) in Latin.

I stopped using Forvm because of his toxicity, and moved onto Coin talk, which I'm pleased to say is much less restrictive in what you can talk about, and generally is a lot nicer to everyone, especially new collectors. It's also a lot more active in terms of users, and is also more up to date in design.

I still have a gallery on Forvm, but barely use it any more. If Coin talk were to have a gallery feature, Forvm would become obsolete.

Sorry if this has become a bit of a rant. I just want to share my experiences with Forvm

 

I think you might be underestimating the usefulness of Forvm's Fake Sellers list and Fake coin galleries.

Cointalk could create a fake seller list, sure, but who's going to maintain it or resolve additions which are disputed?

 

My first coin board experience was on FORVM. I posted a lot over there for several years before I lurked here for several more before posting. I still pop in over there for research quite a bit but post less (not that I don’t enjoy it over there, my coin time is just limited these days and one coin board takes up the free time I get). It’s a great source of information and knowledge. A lot of that knowledge is here too but we can goof around and post about ancient aliens.
