The only thing I don't like about book auctions is it takes so long to get them delivered . I managed to win 2 lots: Lot 70. Lacam's Important Work on Late Roman Coins, & Lot 71, Portrait Coins of Antiquity . https://bid.numislit.com/lots/view/1-4JAYRD/lacams-important-work-on-late-roman-coins https://bid.numislit.com/lots/view/1-4JAYRF/portrait-coins-of-antiquity
No, but it did make me glad to have bought most of my books some years ago... I thought coins were getting expensive; books can be brutal!
I think you got a good buy on the Lacam. At least, I believe I paid more than that for mine years ago.
Do y'all buy these books to use as references, or do you collect the books? I have bought a few books from Kolbe and Fanning before, but not at auction. They have always been prompt with shipping if you buy retail.
I won SNG BnF at opening, as well as Bodenstedt Phokaia. Wanted the reprint but didn't get it, and realistically should have probably went for more of the SNGs as they went fairly cheap. (Levante, Kayhan, vA were all on my list)
A.J., You're right about book prices. I think the pandemic has something to do with that. Collectors are spending more time with their hobbies, driving up markets in general, & people are reading more too. I paid $309.00 for the 3 books including buyers premium & postage. That didn't seem crazy to me.
p-f3.14, I bought the Lacam books for reference & Kurt Lange's book strictly for the photos, like a "coffee table book". The Germans have a sharp eye for numismatic beauty. I shelled out $100.00 for Andreas Pangerl's book PORTRAITS for the same reason when it became available in this country .
Hrefn, You're right about Lacam's books . I've seen European dealers asking up to $400.00 for the two books !
I did not pick up any books from the Kolbe Auction but I would have to differ with Ancient Joe. I actually have picked up more books than coins so far this year. I am a little fuzzy about the numbers but it is something between 10 and 16. Six books came within a very short period of time and I cannot remember if they came in December or January. One of the books is this one The picture on the cover is rather misleading as the coins covered in this volume are the autonomous coins minted during the late Antigonids. It is rather useful as it does cover the anonymous silver coins as well as the aes issues minted during the reigns of Philip V and Perseus. The only real criticism I could level at this book is the quality of the plates. However overall I found the book to be useful and am happy I picked it up.
Congrats on the Lacam pick-up. I saw this auction listing and thought "I really need to bid on that" and then of course totally forgot about it. Perhaps I should first invest in post-it notes.
Crazy. I saw them range for 200-400 but was able to get my set for 140...still a lot but I dont think I will find the two books much cheaper
