I have been kicking around the idea of creating a blast white registry collection of Jefferson war nickels. The purpose would be so that I compare a rainbow toned set versus an untoned collection. The only requirements for the untoned set would be every coin must be MS65+ and at least 5 full steps. With the coins I have currently in my collection, the set would be ranked 17th in the NGC registry. I was thinking of using the name "The Blizzard Collection" Here is a photo of the set in progress. What do you guys think of the idea?
I LOVE IT!!! I am not so much a fan of toned coins, but I do appreciate them. That said, I love the idea of a blast white set of war nickels! I mean think about the irony of any war nickel that you've plucked out of change vs. a blast white coin! The cert is crucial as that better keeps the overdipped coins out. I put together a nice white Jefferson set a few years ago and sold it. (The fun was over once it was built.) The war nickels were difficult to find in white. I might just do something like this myself! That is, as soon as I finish my type sets, my proof sets, and my mint sets...
I also think it is a great idea, you must have quite the hoard of Jeffersons. I appreciate you outlook on collecting, but I am curious... How do you plan on describing these coins in your registry definitions? They all look the same *roughly* I'm excited to see the whole set completed.
Considering they are untoned, the focus of the quality and associated text will have to be related to strike and luster.
Great idea and to see both of those sets in hand right next to each other would be very cool. When you finish it that would make a great display at a ANA show or something like that!!
Yep, we have some snow in CT today. I got about 10 inches at my house. On February 6, 1978 CT had 2 feet of snow & they closed the state for 2-days. I know the date because I met my wife that evening. Today, they may have cancelled the 3rd Sunday coin show due to the snow. It is held every month at the Annex building on the east side of the Q-bridge in East Haven. Let me know if you are interested in learning about any of the other CT shows. Very best regards, collect89
