What countries had coins in a specific year?

How can I find a list of countries that had their own coinage for a specific year? Thinking of doing a World coin birth year set (2 actually) for the years 1965 and 1996, but finding out what countries had coins in that year is not easy.

Anyone know of a list or some relatively easy way to figure it out? Wiki has a list of sovereign states in the '60's/90's, but not just for the specific years.

I think if you go on numista under the coins catalog and filter by year “1965, 1996” it would show all of them listed.

Let me know if you need any help with your sets, I have a bunch of extra foreign coins.

Numista advanced search by year I believe works:

Someone on here did this project but I can't remember who; hopefully they chime in.

Numista advanced search is pretty handy. I use it to ID worn coins by weight, diameter and metal all the time.

Here's a sample search for standard circulation coins issued in 1965 (352 results).
And 1996 (561 results). Then just note down all the countries (~200) and your favorite types from each year. Good luck!

I even have a Numista tab open all the time, but didn't even think of looking there. Must be Monday...

    Thanks all!

I'll check my Hungarian boxes for those two years. I highly recommend
Karl Stephens with this search. Very fair on prices.

Interestingly, I have a large interest in Hungarian coins. My wife is Hungarian, and her Mom recently moved from Debrecen to live with us. I was there in '18, and picked up a Dinar and a 1991 commemorative about the '56 withdrawal of the Soviets at a tiny LCS in Debrecen. Oddly enough, I didn't get anything from '65 (probably didn't even think about it at the time).

On a side-note, my dog now understands more Hungarian than I do, but I get authentic Hungarian food almost daily. YUM!

You'd be surprised at how tricky this can be for certain years! I wanted to do an American version for my Grandma (birth year: 1922). Talk about slim pickings: a penny, a dollar, and a $20 gold piece way out of my price range were all that were minted!
